that? Yes, neither did we.
A few days ago the'word got
abroad that the erappie were biting
at Lake Wichita. Time was when
they bit all the time, more or less,
but of recent years, they seem to
have ceased. Recently, just after
a few million gallons of water from
the diversion lake had been poured
in, they began to bite again: It

this writer journeyed to the scene it
waa time to put up the standing
room only sign, for about all the
space was taken. The old fishing
pier, neglected for several years,
can be reached only by a rather
perilous plank bridge, but this was
negotiated by most of the fishers.
The beat pier, or what is left of it,
was crowded, too.

all there 1. to it. Tuesday Afternoon,
three or four gentlemen came home
with voluptuous strings of crappie,
the largest fish being about two
pounds in weight. Some three er
four dozen gentlemen and ladies
came home with nothing at all tu
show for their time.
The writer modestly lay# claim to
being not entirely void of pisca-
torial acumen, and usually if there
are any fish present, in a biting
humor, he asks no odds. Tuesday
evening he was among the three or
four dozen. He saw within six feet
of one of the successful fishermen,
fished with the same sort of tackle,
with the same rather expensive and
not-too-large minnows—and caught
nothing. He rehed deep, he fished
medium, he fished shallow—and
caught nothing. And all the while
the other fellow-an individual of
ne great intellectual attainments,
apparently—was polling ’em in,
pulling 'em in. •
The afternoon was not without its
compensations, at that. . For in-
stance a prominent and respected
Methodist got quite Immersed to the
lake when he fell out of his beat,
and gave everybody quite a thrill.
Just a few minutes before that his
wife had said, in rebuking him for
something or other. “I wish root

morning," said one of the unlucky
ones, “they toil me they was bitis’
tine then."
“Crappie always bite best about
sundown,” said another. “I’m going
to fish on until then,”
“I don’t believe fish carry
watches, anyhow," i said another,
“they bite when they’re hungry."
An elderly lady who might have
been en route to a card party or
something, from the way she was
dressed, screamed shrilly when her
husband yanked la a fingerling cat-
fish.
“Oh, gracious” she trilled a mo-
ment later “are those little things
minnows? How do folks ever come
to eat the things?’
