detectives Joe Ruhnke and William
Carver were near victims of a
poison gas burglar trap which was
sprung in the J. C. Hull Drug Store
at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday morning
when some one forced the front
door to the store.
The burglar, who was forced to
flee before the poisonous fumes,
may have been dangerously gassed,
according to officers who watched
for his appearance at hospitals.
Upon receiving a report that the
Tront dour of the drug store was
seen standing open the detectives
went to investigate. They were re-
pulsed before getting five feet with-
in the building. -
Mr. Hull, who was awakened at
his home, revealed the trap he had
set for burglars with mustard 838
he made himself.
A jar of the gas, he said, is "St
on a shelf at both the front and
rear doors. When he closes at night
a string is fastened to the jars and
so stretched that it is pulled bi any-
one not knowing its location.
With the upsetting of one of the
jars, Mr. Hull said, the place is im-
mediately filled with gas, making
it impossible for anyone to remain
inside.

Spanish Springs irrigation project,
the fight over which stopped all

eliminated from the Interior depart-
ment appropriation bill as present-

in two weeks after the bank at
Loving, Young county, was looted,
one of the alleged robbers will go
to trial in the 92nd district court
in this city. All three cases against
the youthful Wichitans are sched-
uled for trial next week.
The three defendants, ‘ against
whom bills of indictment were re-
turned by the grand jury now in
session late Monday afternoon, were
arraigned before Judge : Wm. F.
Schenck at 4:30 o’clock Monday
afternoon and the cases s setfor
trial.
John Reed, said to have been the
leader of the gang, will face trial
on Monday, morning, December 8.
Lewis Tillman’s casewill be
called on the morning of December.

upon to face trial on Thursday
morning, December 11. ,
3 Special Venire.
A special venire of 50 men has
been ordered in each of the three
cases and summons to the venire-
men were sent out Tuesday mern-
ing under the direction of Judge
Schenck.
Within half an hour after the
bills of indictment, charging rob-
bery- with firearms, were returned
against the three. Sheriff Cooper
brought Keyes and Reed before
Judge Schenck. The two were
handcuffed together and while the
formalities of setting “their cases
were in progress, neither had any
thing to say. St
The two were returned to the
county jail and Tillman was
brought before the court. Prior to
and after the formalities, Tillman
laughed and joked with the district
attorney and other court attaches.
The district attorney stated Mon-
day evening immediately after the
cases had been set for trial that
the announcement made immediate-
ly alter the men’s apprehension by
Sheriff Middleton of Jack county
that he-would ask for the death
penalty in each case was still his
contention. —

sons were injured in a storm which
buffeted the steamship Leviathan
throughout most of her passage
across the Atlantic, it was learned
today when the liner arrived from
Southampton 24 hours overdue.
The Leviathan-juffered severely,
reaching port with many portholes
smashed and with considerable
damage to her lower decks.Cap-
tain Herbert Hartley reported that
he had kept the bridge throughout
the entire trip with the exception
of one night. It was the worst pas-

A life convict at the West Virginia
penitentiary is alive today, due to a
surgical operation performed by
prison physicians in which three
stitches were used to close a gash
in his, heart. The convict, Roscoe
Caldwell, a negro, was stabbed in.
the left chest with a pair of scissors
by another convict and "the- blade
penetrated the lung and slashed the
heart. The stabbing gecurred six
months ago and Caldwell was dis-
charged from the hospital and re-
turned to prison.

state, tuberculosis sanitarium: at
Kerrville, to the United States gov-
ernment is to be urged by the board
of control, R. B. Walthall 1 board
member, said today. The buildings
are now under lease by the govern-
ment at a monthly rental of $5625.
