State workers travel the cash savings
State Comptroller John Sharp
says state workers will be traveling
the information superhighway the
next time they take to Texas roads
on state business.
A new computerized mileage
guide developed by his office will re-
place a printed version to help state
employees calculate their travel ex-
penses.
That should save the state
money. Every time mileage changes
between cities because of new roads
state agencies have to cough up $60
per copy for new mileage guides at a
cost of about $70,000 to Texas tax-
payers.
Sharp says that after initial start-
up costs, the new computerized
guide should save taxpayers about
$62,000 a year.

A shot in the arm
Texans on welfare will be a little
short of cash if they don’t keep their
kids shots to date.
Under a law that becomes effec-
tive Sept. 1, the state will hold back
$25 from monthly welfare checks for
each child without the proper im-
munizations until the parent proves
the vaccines are up to date.
Taking $25 from a $188-a-month
benefit for a single-parent, two-child
family could be a big motivator, sup-
porters say, and it could be a big shot
in the arm for Texas health con-
cerns.

It’s a fact:
The National Association of Attor-
neys General said the number of in-
mate lawsuits has increased from
2,000 in 1970 to 33,000 in 1990. In
Texas that number has increased
from 659 in 1993 to 994 in 1994.
Quote of the week:

illegal aliens are apprehended

and conservative columnist Patrick
Buchanan on illegal immigration.
