State Sen. Drew Nixon

Staff in the office of State Sen.
Drew Nixon announced Monday
afternoon that the senator would
not seek re-election. As the filing
deadline came and went, Nixon
did not file with the state Republi-
can Party for re-election.
Robert Holcomb, Nixon's spokes-
person, said the senator's decision
was hinged on time, the time
needed to be an effective senator
and the demands of his business.
Nixon was elected to the Texas
Senate, District 3 position, in 1994
and was re-elected by a slim ma-
jority in 1996.
Sen. Nixon refused to step down
after he was arrested by Austin
police for soliciting a prostitute
and illegally carrying a weapon.
State party leaders had urged him
to do so, but he continued to serve
in the post saying he would finish
his term and then give someone
else the chance to serve.
Seeking election to the post are
Republicans State Rep. Todd
Staples, Les Tarrance and Van
Brookshire; and Democrat David
Fisher.
