Eagles fly high after successful scrimmage
Mike Hall
The Rusk Eagles are flying high
after a successful scrimmage with
Madisonville last week.
From top to bottom, the Eagles
have shown vast improvements in
every aspect of the game. Coach
Mahaffey said he andnis staff are
very excited at
how the teams
played, espe-
cially with as
little prepara-
tion as they
had for
Madisonville.
"We had an
outstanding
performance
from an inten-
sity and an ex-
ecution stand
point. There is always room for
improvement, but we are far bet-
ter than we had hoped for at this
point," he said.
Getting excited about a season is
very easy when talking with Coach
Mahaffey. His enthusiasm just
gets to you, especially when he's
speaking about the players.
"The boys were just flying to the
ball on defense and making plays.
On offense we missed a few as-
signments, but nothing that
couldn't be corrected, with both
first and second team offense suc-
cessfully driving the ball down field
with ease," he said. "It was all
around a very good and positive
thing for us."
The best part of it all is the way
bid
The 2000 Rusk Eagle Varsity Football Team is preparing for the second scrimmage of the year on
their home turf against Palestine. The freshman team will take to the field at 5:30 p.m., followed by
the J.V. team at 6:30 and the varsity team at 7:30 p.m.
he described the players efforts.
'The kids are really focused on
improving every day, and with the
strength of the district we play in
that's exactly how we need to be;
taking one game at a time, and
week by week. 1 expect we will be
farther along in the weeks to come,"
he said.
Looking ahead to this week's
scrimmage, Coach Mahaffey said,
"This second scrimmage may show
us more, because sometimes emo-
tion can run high in the first scrim-
mage of the year. But I feel our
execution and intensity was just
the quality of our team coming
out, and we look forward to a very
good year."
This week the Eagles will face
Palestine, at home, in the final
scrimmage of the year before open-
ing regular season play on the road
against Tatum, Sept. 8.
The scrimmage this week will
start with the freshman team at
5:30 p.m..followed by the J.V. team
at 6:30 and ending with the Var-
sity at approximately 7:30 p.m.
