we were bleaaed with him.
Everyone ia always asking,
where doea he get that red
Hair? Grant juat givea them all
the aame anawer. "Out of my
head". He ia a joy to ua and I
hope ho hua a terrific birthday.
Happy Birthday, Grant!
After looking through some
of the old papera at the library
I thought I would tell one of
the highlighta of the past that
happened in the aame week
of the month only many yeara
Rusk Slate Hospital,
in the paat. There ian't room
for the entire artlole ao I
will Juat try to aummarlso

week of February in lty40 waa
"Pin* Seedling Farm May R«
KitabllihedHm". Government
Poreatry officiala in Lufkih
had teamed up with the folka
from A & M College in Bryan
and viaited Alto aeveral timea
in hopea of finding a place auit-
able to build a seedling farm
for pine trcea. Soil anmplea
were taken and a place waa
located about five milea weat
of Alto on the aouth aide of
the Old San Antonio Road.
The farm would require about
70 aerea. Tho main problem
waa the fact that the man who
owned the land wanted $40 an
acre and the government waa
only authorised to pay $2Ban
aero. The balance would have
to come from local aourcea if
aomething couldnt be worked
out. The other problem waa
that all of the well water didn't,
teat out, ao in order to meet
the farina needa they might
have to pipe water in from
the river. A CCC (Civilian
Convocation Corpa) Camp
would be aatabliahad it the
farm with ISO men to work the
farm far two or three yeara,
then local talent would take
over the project. Alto officiala
atated that if thia farm could
be eatabliahed, that it would
mean a great deal to Alto.
I'm proud to aay that their
wiah came true and 61 yeara
later they are atill growing
troea at the Indian Mound Tree
Nuraery. Let me know if you
think thia little addition to
the column will be of intereat
to you.
I can get myaalf Into aome
of the biggeat meaaea. My
neighbor, Virgil Schochler ia
going to be 90 yeara old on
Sunday, March 11, Hia daugh-

thia week to have her fanny
bone worked on in her elbow
and I doht know when, aho ia
coming back. If ahe finds a
