Life with the paper
By David "Scoop" Johnson
The election is over. It is over and I am glad. I don't mind
saying that my man won but I'm not going to rub itin. I amjust
going to settle back, relax and see what happens.
The trouble is that when I relax all kinds of odd things run
through my poor blank mind. During my last relaxing period
some of the things that really bug me crowded their way into
my thoughts. I tried not to think of them but I lost. In fact I am
still thinking about them, they make me kind of mad and here
they are.
Mustard in a squeeze bottle! Now who is the genius that
dreamed that wonder up. For one thing the sound is atrocious.
Who in the he world wants to hear a big "Bruuuh-aah-ap" just
as they are putting the finishing touches on their balogna
sandwich. Then comes the yellow, watery, liquid, running out
all over the flat, un-penetrable meat, through the bread and on
to the table. Then, a final "Blatth" and a pretty sick looking dab
of mustard ozzeses out onto the poor unsuspecting sandwich.
It is usually about this time that I pitch the obscene mustard
bottle, the bread, the slice of balogna and whip up a nice
radish, butter, onion and peanut butter sandwich. Nothing
really beats those old standbys.
Just for the record I do not like ketchup in a squeeze bottle
either. Now I suppose it is just a matter of time before some
real bright individual decides that milk should be packaged in
some type of a squeezable container.
I am not sure why most of my pet peeves concern food. I
didn't even realize it until the other day when I stopped to have
lunch in this swank little Dallas restaurant that had recently
gone from a YUPPY type decor to Western.
I unsuspectedly entered the place only to find that the little
dainty, metal tables and chairs had been replaced with little
wood tables and chairs. The carpet was gone, leaving an
exposed wooden floor and the doily table cloths had been
replaced with checkered oil cloths. The lamps were now
wagon wheels rather than little Porsches, but besides the fact
that quiche was now completely out, the menu was the same.
Who ever heard of sauteed chicken and crab meat, lightly
smothered with a Light Italian Holidays sauce, with just a
touch of Longhorn Cheese, served on a bed of green pasta
being offered up in a western restaurant. They said the decor
got changed prior to the menu and that chicken fired steak
would not be available until next Wednesday.
I ordered a "Lite Salesbury Steak Sandwich" which looked
suspiciously like a hamburger. While I waited the waiter
handed me a squeeze type mustard jar. "Anything else?" The
watery eyed fellow asked.
"Well," I responded, "do you have milk in a squeeze
container?"
The waiter looked puzzled and a little mad.
Probably a Republican.
