thousand persons in Chicago today
were ill from influenza, and reports
were the contagion had appeared in
cities and towns throughout the
middle west. Pneumonia also was re-
ported epidemic, and proportionately clont
had caused a larger number ofhave
deaths. Influensa’ continued to ap
pear in a mild form, and the death
rate was low.
A shortage of trained nurses handi-
happed the efforts of the Chicago
health officials to control the influ.
enza situation. During the last 24
hours new cases were reported at the
rate of 50 an hour. Of these 30%
c ould not be gives even temporary
supervision by trained nurses. Fil-
teen hundred additional nurses are
urgently needed at once, the health
commissioner announced.
While the number of new influenza
cases reported to the Chicago board
of health reached 2.514, which was
115 more than ter any similar period
during the 1918 epidemic. Dr. John
Dill Robertson, health commissioner,
expressed his opinion that “the ept-
demie to near its climax."
Deaths from influenza in Chicago
during the last 24 hours numbered

Reports to Illinois state health offi-
cers indicated the epidemic was sub.
