an application, some possible testing and an
interview,” Bichler said. “It’s advantageous for
people to go through a job-search firm. They
don’t have to spend a dime and, aside from
the interview, it’s virtually painless. A two-
hour investment is worth their involvement for
the opportunities we can offer them.”
The benefits one may find while working at
a temporary service are numerous. In addi-
tion to the flexibility of working at times that
are convenient to you and hours that fit your
schedule, temporary services provide a varie-
ty of extras such as vacation pay, holiday pay,
sick pay and dental insurance programs,
according to Wimpee and Adams.
Using a temporary service also benefits the
company using a service, according to Jackie
Adams, corporate accounts manager of Fir-
stWord Staffing Services.
Not only does using a temporary service
save the company money on training new
workers for postions, but it also saves the
company the cost of advertising for new posi-
tions, and saves time in interviewing for posi-
tions available positions.
The four primary reasons that companies
may seek the services of a temporary service
is the need for workers during vacation time,
illnesses, peak periods and special projects,
said Wimpee.
“We supply our clients with anywhere from
clerical to executive level employees,” said
Wimpee, who indicated that Kelly Services
offers both full time and temporary positions.
“We work with about 9,000 companies from
throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in sup-
plying staffing to them.”
The Dating Game
Working on a temporary basis gives both
the employee and employer an opportunity to
discover one another, and perhaps expand
their relationship from a temporary to full time.
Adams refers to this phenomena as “the dat-
ing game.” This is one reason why large cor-
porations are turning more now to temporary
services to find their full-time employees.
“For instance, if you go into a company as a
temporary employee and didn’t like it, you can
just call our service and say the company is
not for you,” she said. Likewise, by hiring tem-
porary workers, a company has the opportun-
ity to sample an employee without making a
large commitment.
“It is a win-win situation for everybody,”
Adams explains.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
companies may need temporary service
agencies now more than they did a few years
ago, Bichler said.
“Layoffs don’t look good for the company.
And you don’t hear of a big layoff with a tem-
porary service.
Statistics indicate that temporary full-time
placements are becoming increasingly popu-
lar for both employee and employer.
‘Thirty-eight to 45 percent of temporary
employees do become full-time employees,”
said Adams.
A major reason for such a success rate is
that once a worker is connected to a com-
pany, he or she receives increased exposure
in which various contacts are made for future
positions.
“You are meeting people that are in the
company,” said Adams. “It has a snow-balling
(chain-of-contact) effect, because you are not
just a resume being received in the mail, you
are a real person.”
College students and mothers who aren’t
looking for a full-time job are good candidates
for temporary work. By working as much or as
little as they wish and the hours they desire,
temporaries can work around their schedule.
For a mother with children in school, she can
take days off to go on a field trip, see her child
act in a play or stay home with a child who is ill.
For college students and teachers, working
temporary can be a great summer job. The
supplemental income comes in handy, and
for the college student who has several sum-
mer activities scheduled, their work schedule
can be molded around their agenda.
Temporaries can expect to make any
where from minimum wage to $15 an hour.
The longer they work with a temp service, the
more experience they acquire, and they are
able to land better jobs.
The opportunity for those wishing to work
temporary jobs is steadily growing, too.
According to Adams, there is a tremendous
need for temporary workers. In fact, from
1992 to 1993 First Word witnessed a 56 per-
cent increase in the number of temprory em-
ployees at its company.
“The unemployment rate is real low right
now,” Bichler said. There are a lot of jobs
available. We have temporary services fight-
ing over people.”
Adams said that they have more jobs avail-
able now than they do temporary employees.
There is a huge need for temporary work-
ers. It is growing all of the time,” said Adams.
The greatest challenge for us is to continue
to find good people that want to work. We
have the jobs.”
