By FRANK E. GRIFFIS
AUSTIN, Tex. (UPI) — Like an animated merry-go-round,
. the dancers - young and old - skipped and whirled arm-in-
arm in a tight-circle, cheered on by a hand-clapping, foot-
tapping audience.
The dances (and almost everyone danced) came from
• worlds apart, now a German polka, now a bolero, suddenly a
. Mexican two-step, and it was lively, loud and boisterous.
"It’s called conjunto," said Bennie Romero, 43, owner and
bartender of La Plaza night club in the old downtown area.
. "It’s Tejano, fronteria - Mexican border music," he said,
plopping a couple of beers on a table, scooping up a dollar bill
and hustling back to the bar.
According to Romero, conjunto also quickly is becoming
popular outside the Texas-Mexicoborder. It should — it’s
peppy and easy to dance to.
> - "It’s going to be real popular, especially here in Texas,”
Romero said. .
- A regular crowd of MexicanAmericans and university stu-
dents pack the La Plaza nightly to dance to the music of a
conjunto band, a collection of musicians whom Romero pays
individually rather than as a group.
The lyrics of their songs (always sung in Spanish or Tex-
Mex) are the universal “goodbye lil’ darlin” or “why did you
leave me” variety, but the music is lively and envigorating.
Romero said the music has both Mexican and German
roots, exemplified by the use of German accordians and the
, bajo sexto, or classical Spanish 12-string bass guitar.
The rest of the band usually includes a vocalist, a trum-
peter, a drummer and sometimes a saxaphone player
Favorite tunes include "Gavino Barrera": (about a
cowboy); “Cin Ti" (Yours): “Viva Seguine" (a nearby
German community) and more traditional tunes such as
Rosita (a polka), "Salvador" (a waltz), and "La Cumbia" (a
mamba). - - ==

Don‘t Take Allergies To Chiropractors
I just read an ad that says
that allergies might be cured by
chiropracties. Before I get
involved I would like your
opinion about this. - Mr. D.G.,
N.Y.
Dear Mr. G.:
When you say “before you get
involved" it intimates that you
are seriously considering
embarking on a program that
has no medical validity.
I, too, read that ad-
vertisement and, frankly, was
. shocked that it was even ac-
cepted by a reputable
newspaper.
I was particularly disturbed
by the following statement:
"One way to help the allergy
sufferer is to strengthen the
body’s natural defenses by
restoring the unimpeded flow of
the nerve impulses that keep
the body functioning normally."
The statement continues, “If
you suffer from any kind of
allergy see your doctor or
chiropractor today."
The exploitation of the sick by
any method is distressing.
People like you, already bur-
dened by the discomfort of
allergies, should not be enticed
into a trap that will do no more
than add cost to that discom-
- fort
It may be that the immediate
response of some chiropractors
: will be that l,as a physician, am
one of the many who denies the
contribution to their patients.
- For them, let me state that I
: have always maintained that
% the chiropractor who recognizes
- his limitations can, in
: cooperation with physicians,
: make a definite contribution to
- certain patients.
your health
destroy the valuable
relationship between doctor and
patient. Open discussion will
help to solidify that relation-
When, however, such ad-
vertisements as the one you
mention reflect total lack of
scientific responsibility, these
chiropractors do themselves a
great injustice.
I feel certain that most
chiropractors will feel as
disturbed as I am about an
advertisement that can only
serve to undermine their fine
reputation.
A simple rule of safety
suggests that before you or
anyone becomes involved in a
method of treatment so foreign
to the accepted practices by
reputable allergists you should
first ask your own doctor’s
opinion.
SPEAKING OF YOUR
HEALTH Do not permit a
petty misunderstanding to
ship.
