Ford Grabs Mississippi Edge:
Reagan’s Strategy Backfires
WASHINGTON AP - President
Ford grabbed an edge in the fight over
s , Mississippi’s uncommitted delegates as
• I he and challenger Ronald Reagan
turned their attention today to Penn-
sylvania. now the other major bat
tieground in the contest for the GOP
He said Ford promised him he would

struggle for the state's votes, the
largest uncommitted group headed for
nomination.

WITH FORD now having 1,097 votes
in The Associated Press delegate
survey Mississippi's 30 votes could put
him within reach ol the 1,130 total
needed for the nomination Reagan now
has 1,023 votes, with 139 delegates
uncommitted
Reed said in a statement released in
Jackson, Miss., that he defected
because Reagan picked Pennsylvania
Sen Richard Schweiker, a liberal, as
his running mate
I believe having this kind of vice
president is too big a price to pay for the
nomination," Reed said.
Even before Reed s statement, Ford
and Reagan backers in Mississippi said
the President was picking up strength
among the delegates, who had long
been considered to heavily favor
Reagan
ALTHOUGH REED said he was not
going to ask other delegates to follow
his lead, his defection could give Ford a
majority of the delegation s votes,
enough to control all 30 ballots under a
unit rule.
As the Schweiker choice was cutting
into Reagan’s Southern backing. Sch-
weiker himself sought to turn his
alliance with the former California
governor into a plus for Reagan
He prepared to talk to the 103-
member Pennsylvania delegation at a
Capitol meeting late today to try to
swing votes to Reagan.
After meeting with Schweiker, the
delegation was scheduled to go to the
White House to meet with Ford, who
now holds a 70 to six edge in the
delegation, with 27 delegates un-
decided.
Reagan said from his Santa Barbara,
Calif , ranch, that Reed earlier had
pledged to support him
"I WAS disappointed that Clarke
wont keep his longtime personal
commitment," the former California
governor said.
Reed said he would vote for Ford in.
the Mississippi caucus in Kansas City.
Traditionally, the state's delegation has
gone to the convention uncommitted
and then voted as a bloc, following the
wishes of the majority of the
delegation
"I have not asked any members of
the delegation to support any candidate
and I do not intend to do so," Reed said.
As the GOP nomination fight heated
up, Democratic presidential nominee
Jimmy Carter received a 5‘2-hour
briefing from CIA Director George
Bush on Wednesday. Bush said the
briefing went into a "great deal of
detail" on top-secret intelligence
matters. - *
The reaction among Mississippi GOP
leaders was predictable: Ford backers
were happy and Reagan supporters
vowed to continue the fight
“I AN VERY happy with it, because
Clarke is one of the most astute
politicians in the country," said Ford
campaign manager Gil Carmichael.
"This serves s* a signal to the rest of
the state delegation that we have the
power now to get on with the selection
party.”

Police Capture 2nd Kidnaper
MENLO PARK, Calif. (UPI) -
Police today arrested bus kidnap
suspect James Schoenfeld, ending an
all-night search on the San Francisco
Peninsula.
He was arrested in an old van with
Idaho license plates just after daybreak
in an industrial area near Highway 101,
police said
"He offered no resistence and was
calm and peaceful," a police
spokesman said The van was followed
north along highway 101 from Mountain
View, but patrolmen lost track of it
farther north in Palo Alto. It was
sighted again in Menlo Park.
Officer Garry Lackman of the Menlo
Park police department made the
arrest.
Schoenfeld's “scared" brother.
Richard. 22. who surrendered volun-
tarily last Friday, was expected to be
whisked in and out of Chowchilla today
for arraignment on 43 counts of kid
naping and robbery
Chowchilla police confirmed that a
shotgun blast was fired through the
windows of the abandoned old justice
court Monday night Today’s arraign-
ment was to be held in the new justice
court before Judge Howard Green in *
courtroom with 49 seats.
Houchins, in discussing plans to move
Schoenfeld to Chowchilla said "we are
not too much in fear of a lynching,” but
authorities named a special security

to guard the suspect.

Iranian Education Expands
By JOYCE HOPKINS.
Education W riter
"In Iran at the present time, ex
pansion of higher education is so fast
that we really can't keep pace with it,"
Dr Nasser Mahutian, academic vice
president of Farah Pahlevi University
said
This effort to expand is what this year
took a bit of Denton, via Texas
Woman’s University, to his university
outside Tehran and Dr. Mahutian to
Denton Wednesday and Thursday
TWO and Farah Pahlevi. now a
woman’s university which began as a
college 12 years ago, signed an

ministrators and which will lead to
student and faculty exchange
MAHUTIAN said his country had 20
universities, of which 13 are older
schools and seven have been
established during the past two years,
some of which are still in the setting up
stage.
"In addition to that, we have close to
98 or 100 institution* of higher education
that are not complete universities." he
said, such as for nursing and banking
Farah Pahlevi is the only single sex
university in Iran
"Il the institution were another fine
institution of higher education, then I
could not justify why we should accept
only girls," said Mahutian, whose
master's and doctorate in nuclear
sciences are from the University of
Michigan at Ann Arbor.
"THE EMPHASIS Is on educating
future leaders for the country, like
presidents of universities, (to produce!
not just a very good chemist, but a girl
who could accept an administrative
role," he explained
Mahutian explained that Farah
Pahlevi, which taught primarily the
humanities as a college, will offer more
than just subject matter in its curricula
to turn out graduates who are more
than just experts in their chosen fields.
At Farah Pahlevi University, a
number of courses help a student
realize her capacities. We hope to have
students participate as much aa
possible in university affairs. Students
are member* in our senate, and we like
to delegate duties to students to see how
they can do — like on-the-job training
for leaders," he said.
. SUCH COMMENTS brought a smie
from Manudan’s counterpart at TWU,
Dr Lealie Kreps, who agreed that this
was the same philosophy followed by
the local woman's university. As
Mahutian continued, so did Kreps
agreement
