NEW YORK (UPD - Christine
Andreas burst into her dressing room at
the St. James Theatre, announcing to
the world with an enormous smile:
“I sang.'Vissi d'Arte' so beautifully it
would have knocked you on your arse! I
was inspired!"

Andreas, the pert young (24) Eliza
Doolittle of the 20th anniversary
production of “My Fair Lady,"
remained in character even after a
session of opera with her singing
teacher. Mocheli Fonticoli
"I do opera only in the studio with my
teacher," she explained "It 's good for
my stamina, and God knows I need it at
this point."
it’s a big, demanding, starring role
Christine is on stage most of the tune,
has nine numbers to sing and dances on
stage for the first time in her career
The most exhausting scene, and one of.
the greatest in any musical is the one
in Henry Higgins' study where "Just
You Wait," “The Rain In Spain," and “I
Could Have Danced All Night" follow
right on one another's heels
Christine’s Eliza is different from
that of Julie Andrews 20 years ago She
may be a less appealing waif, but she’s
more believable as the street-corner
flower seller and still carries an air of
the wrong side of the tracks where Julie
Andrews was very much the lady. And
— her voice is bigger than .Julie’s,
A few months before “My Fair
Lady," Christine was cast in the
straight dramatic role of the cockney
maid in “Angel Street" with Dina
career has been inordinately smooth,
for show business. She was born.in
Camden, N.J., sang in summer stock
after finishing school, then landed the
plum job of Hodel in the road "Fid-
dler."-
“I'm fairly uncomplicated," she said.
"I had a very normal happy childhood
Merrill on Broadway. Her cockney __________
accent was deplorable But she still won singing My first major job was a road
the cockney role of Eliza from among company of ‘Fiddler.’ I met my
husband in the cast Then I got an agent
more than 300 other hopefuls, partly
because of her well-trained voice,
partly because she had worked before
with director Jerry Adler, as standby in
Sammy Cahn's “Words and Music "
Her cockney improved out of sight
under the coaching of Elizabeth Smith,
the voice coach for John Houseman’s
Acting Company.
"I’m getting so comfortable in the
cockney now that some of the words
may be getting lost. It’s something I
have to keep up with ."
Christine Andreas is married to
actor-singer-composer Keith Baker
They live on the upper west side in
Manhattan with a west highland
terrier named Perchik — after the role
in “Fiddler on the Roof" which Keith
was playing when they met
She is the first to acknowledge her
without any hangups. I always liked
and he got me better and better jobs Of
course, 1 don't say it's that easy for
everyone
"I do yoga." she added "Yop need
some outlet after a show and yoga helps
a lot. Everything is at fever pitch 1
found it hard to get a proper sleep for
months after the dress rehearsals in
Philadelphia in midFebruary lan
(Richardson, her Prof Higgins: is
amazing he can sleep anywhere, in
between performances "
She is excited about the show, and her
life revolves around what she does on
stage or rehearsals
“I’m so involved with this (a vague
wave of the hand encompassing the
theater) that 1 don't really know what 1
do "

Elaborately gowned and coiffed. Christine Andreas as Eliza
Doolittle prepares to make her grand entrance in the
ballroom scene from "My Fair Lady." The petite actress
won the role in the musical's 20th anniversary production
despite her inadequate cockney accent.
