Eagle golf coach Herb Ferrill, former Denton
Country Club golf pro Buster Creagh, along with
Clayton Cole, chapter president, and Charles Brid-

. THE ONLY APPARENT flaw in current thinking is
“the venture is for boys only at this stage
2’ And that leads to an old story You see it every
.summer Full encouragement of youth golf programs
‘and then no program for the girls to speak of
: Take the Denton Country Club for example Strong
.emphasis is always placed on the youth program but
when it comes tournament time and it's things like the
Father-Son tournament with no mention of the young
Sadies.
2 Of course, any progress is admirable and the
.planned golf academy is a step in the right direction It
sure hurt the civic and state pride when three of our
young golfers recently attended the Sooner School of
.Golf on the Oklahoma campus in Norman.
: Speaking of girl golfers, the recent Denton County
“Golf Association only attracted two of the young ladies
in the area Maybe that speaks for itself on the at-
Etention span of the young ladies. And the same junior
tournament attracted 35 boys for the two-day event at
:NTSU and TWU golf courses
: A SUGGESTION TOWARD improving the turnout
sight be consideration of having the DCGA tour-
inament at the end of the Spring semester or better yet,
. during September after a full summer of competition
“That is if King Football doesn’t mind the interference
: Realistically, the junior and high school coaches
should be grateful for the assistance in their golf
program with the always present problem of
scheduling.
- Golfers around NTSU golf course are saddened by
the passing of Fred Slack However, he would be
happy for one of his teammates in their usual lusty
weekly matches it seems that Odus Mitchell, that
always youthful, long-time NTSU football coach,
finally shot his age or better last week
He has been trying for sometime Matter of fact, he
was once almost involved in a promotional scheme
with the Ben Hogan golf club people with a promise of
new clubs if he ever shot his age
; Last week coach Mitchell shot 75 He claims he
didn’t mention it to his teammales during the round
, but shot eight consecutive pars on the NTSU back nine
'with a double bogie on 18.

Tanner Says Chicago’s No-Hitter Tainted
OAKLAND (AP) - "It
was the most tainted no-
hitter I've ever seen," said
Oakland A’s manager Chuck
Tanner "Or maybe I should
call it the funniest."
But to the Chicago White
Sox’ John "Blue Moon"
Odom, who pitched five
hitless though walk-filled
innings to get credit for the 2-
1, no-hit victory. "It was one
of the happiest times of my
life "
Odom spent-11 seasons
with the As. who gave up on
him last year He was in the
minor leagues a month ago
before the White Sox gave
him a fresh start
Francisco Barrios, a
rookie relief pitcher, took
over for Odom in the sixth.
The Si-year-old veteran had
issued his ninth walk, to Billy
Williams leading off, and
thrown one ball to Sal Bando
before Sox manager Paul
Richards sent coach Jim
Busby to the mound to get
Odom
"I had a pretty good idea
about the second inning that
Odom wasn't going to last
the whole game," said
Richards, and Odom ad
mitted he wasn't surprised
when taken out
“I didn't have my rhythm
I'm glad it happened.
though Maybe if I’d been
around the plate all the time,
we wouldn’t have gotten the
nohitter I’m glad I was
wild." said Odom, 2-0 with
Chicago
The no-hitter by the two
right handers, who totaled 11
walks, was the American
League s first this year and
the fourth combination no-
hitter in. major league
baseball history It was the
first time two pitchers
combined to win a nine-in-
ning. no-hit game, not
counting a 1»17 American
League game in which
Boston’s Babe Ruth was
ejected after walking one
hatter and Ernie Shore went
to the mound to get 27
straight outs.
