Lewisville JV
freezes Ponies
On a night more suited for polar heart than football
players, Lewisville used a rare commodity — the toward
pass — to freeze the Denton Ponies 27-21 in sub-tropic Bronco
Stadium Thursday night.
The Ponies led 21-30 on the strength of Cedric Batey's 14-
yard touchdown dash and David Tent a two-point conversion
pass to Steve Dulin, until Lewisville went to the air midway
in the final period.
A 20-yard scoring pass with 7:20 left gave the visitor* a 26-
21 lead and the point after was good, to leave the Ponies at 6-3
in their season finale.
The Ponies did have one last ditch effort in the Junior
varsity contest, played in a wind chill factor of some 20
degrees, to thaw out and come away from defeat. Lewsiville
fumbled at the Pony 31 with 39 seconds left but the Ponies
saw their victory march snuffed out with a game-ending
interception at the Lewisville 15.
Nonetheless, the Ponies did rally from a 13-7 halftime
deficit to lead until Lewisville completed only its fourth pass
of the game to eke out the victory.
. Welton Wilkerson s one-year smash on fourth down
climaxed an 11-play, 20-yard drive to give the Ponies a 13-13
tie with 6:19 left in the third period. But Lewisville forged
ahead on a beautiful play action pass that covered 00 yards
for a 21-13 margin before Batey went 14 yards and the two-
point pass put Denton ahead in the see-saw game.
Batey did all that he could do. as the Denton sophomore
rushed for 203 ysrds on 23 attempts Batey’s 52-yard jaunt set
up Wilkerson's one-yard tally
Denton scored first on Richard Herron's wingback reverse
of 52 yards to lead 7-0 with 30 seconds left in the first period
Then Lewisville came back for two touchdowns in the second
period, on two and one-yard runs, to lead 13-7 at half
The Ponies' first possession of the game ended on an end
tone interception, the first of four they had on a night suited
more for the run than the pass except that Lewisville went
against the predictable to win
