designed to promote
awareness of drug abuse
and build, community
awareness for making
smart choices for a drug-
free lifestyle.
Students at Groom ISD
will promote awareness
with numerous activities.
They invite the community

feasible.
On Monday, Groom
students will receive a
special button promoting a
drug-free logo. Everyone is
asked to take a stand for a

Commissioners Court of
Carson County met in
pursuant to adjournment
with the members and
officers present as

County Judge Lewis W.
Powers; Mike Britten,
Commissioner, Pr. #1;

Kenneth
Commissioner,
Jerry Strawn,
Commissioner, Pr. #3;
Kevin Howell,
Commissioner, Pr. #4.
Minutes of the September
22, 2003 meeting were
read and approved. The
court voted to pay all
claims with one correction.
Commissioner Britten
asked the court to consider
paying Erma Luna, who is
the custodian for two
county offices in Groom, to
be changed from contract
labor to a salaried part-
time employee so that
social security will be
deducted from her
earnings. The court voted
to allow the request.
Kevin Brennan of
Perdue, Brandon, Fiedler,
Collins and Mott gave a
presentation to the court
regarding the collection of
delinquent court costs and
fines. The court agreed to
table making any decisions
until all of the material can
be reviewed.
A public comments
hearing was held regarding
the proposed
pesticide/herbicide
regulation of Carson
County. Approximately
sixteen farmers spoke to
the Commissioner’s Court.
The court considered dates
and permit requirements
under the regulations. The
court agreed to set the
regulated period between
May 10 and September 10
of each year. They agreed
to restrict the use of Ester
formulations within the
regulated period and
review the issue of
regulation in one year.
Commissioner Howell
made a motion to set the
regulation or
pcsticide/herbicides in
Carson County. There was
no second. The motion
died and no action was
taken.
The court discussed
closing the railroad
crossing at County Road 8.
The court decided agreed
to close the railroad
crossing at County Road 8
and to reconstruct a road
that will be an extension of
County Road 8 to County
Road G pursuant to an
agreement with the
landowner.
Judge Powers presented
the court with new First
Care contracts. The court
agreed to sign the
contracts.
Gary Robertson, County
Sheriff, asked the court to
consider hiring Roland
McGill to act as bailiff for
the county. He requested
the hourly rate be set at
$7.15 per hour to be paid
out of courthouse security.
The court agreed to hire

GROOM CUBS are
home once again this week
as they play host to Ft.
Elliott on Thursday,
October 23. Game time is
5:00 p.m.
THE TIGERS are on
the road this week. They
travel to Briscoe to play Ft.
Elliott on Friday, October
24. Game time is 7:30.

METHODIST Church of
Groom will hold their
Annual Harvest Dinner on
Sunday, October 26 from
11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in
the Groom School cafeteria.

Favorite Hat Night for the
AWANA club at the First
Baptist Church. It is also
Double AWANA Buck
Night. AWANA is open to
anyone ages 3-sixth grade.
