UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES D. MARLEY, OF DODD, TEXAS.
MARKER ATTACHMENT FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,653, dated August 11, 1891.
Application filed March 23, 1891, Serial No. 386,124. (No model,)To cdl whomn it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES D. MARLEY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Dodd,
in the county of Fannin and State of Texas,
5 have invented a new and useful Marker At-
tachment for Plows, of which the following
is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved de-
vice to be used upon plows, and the objects
io are to provide means whereby the succeeding
row to be plowed may be marked, thereby
giving a uniform plowing to the field; fur-
thermore, to provide for an adjustment of the
marker, whereby the distance between the
15 rows may be increased or decreased.
With the above objects in view the inven-
tion consists in certain features of construc-
tion hereinafter specified, and particularly
pointed out in the claim.
20 Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a
perspective of a plow provided with an at-
tachment constructed in accordance with my
invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section
through the plow-beam.
25 Like numerals of reference indicate like
parts in both the figures of the drawings.
1 designates an ordinary plow, terminating
at its rear end in the standard 2, carrying the
share or shovel 3. Upon the plow-beam 1
30 there is mounted a pair of bearing-clips 4,
connected by a tie-plate 5, under which .the
clips are nutted, as at 6,'and at their upper
ends said clips are provided with bearing-
perforations 7.
35 8 designates aY-shaped or bifurcated arm,
the branches of the wires being laterally dis-
posed in opposite directions to form bearing-
trunnions 9, which take into the perforations
of the clips, whereby said arms may be thrown
40 to either side of the beam. The outer or free
end of the Y-shaped arm is slotted, as at 10,
and at intervals provided with adjusting-
holes 11.
13 designates the marker, and the same con-
45 sists of a shank 14, having a series of perfo-
rations 15, through which and the adjusting-holes of the arms bolts 16 are passed. This
marker further consists in a pair of diverg-
ing downwardly and forwardly curved mark-
ing-points 17, disposed in opposite directions, 50
either one of which may be thrown into op-
erative position in accordance with the side
of the plow-beam to which the arm and marker
are swung.
By manipulating the adjusting-bolts 16 it 55
will be obvious that the distance between the
beam and marking-points may be increased
or diminished, as may be desired, so that the
rows marked off will be closer together or
farther apart accordingly. 6o
In operation the plow moving along the
ground follows the mark indicated by the
marker and formed by the same during the
plowing of the previous furrow, and while
moving said marker is marking out the line 65
for the next furrow, and so on, said marker
being reversed or swung to the opposite side
of the beam when the plow reaches the end
of the furrow and is turned about to return.
Having described my invention, what I 70
claim is-
The combination, with the plow-beam and
the pair of clips mounted thereon and pro-
vided at their upper ends with bearing-perfo-
rations, of the Y-shaped arm, the branches of 75
which are oppositely disposed to form bear-
ing-trunnions mounted in the perforations of
the clips, and the shank of which is slotted
and perforated at intervals, the marking de-
vice consisting of the perforated shank fitting 80
within the slot of the arm and at its outer
end in deflected oppositely-disposed mark-
ing-points, and the bolt passing through the
slotted arm and the perforations of the marker,
substantially as specified. 85
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
presence of two witnesses.
JAMES D. MARLEY.
