Put Safety In
Santa's Bag
Christmas time is always looked
forward to as a joyous season, but
unless safety is considered in
choosing Christmas toys, the sur-
i prises left by Santa may prove
tragic. Mrs. Eloise T. Johnson,
I specialist in family life education
with the A.&M. College Extension
Service, gives a few pointers for
buyers of children's toys.
Remember the child's age, his
interest, and stage of development,
Mrs. Johnson reminds, because chil-
dren naturstfly arfl curious and
constant supervision is not always
possible. A two-year-old in the
hand-to-mouth age should have
washable toys with no sharp points
or edges and nothing flammable
nor with poisonous paint should be
included.
Stuffed animals, the specialist
points out, somatima offer haaards
if they have glass eyea or buttons
which may come off. She suggests
rubber balls, plastic bathtub toys,
solid wood toys, or light weight
hollow blocks.
For children between the ages
of six and eight, electrical toys are
popular. Mrs. Johnson advises,
however, that these should have
the seal of approval from Under
w i iter Laboratories — a guarantee
of proper construction against fire
hazard and shock.
A place to keep toys can be a
safety measure. A box, cupboard
or open shelf is handier than draw-
ers or a cabinet with doors which
are hard to manage and sometimes
stuk. "Playthings are the tools
which help children to learn," says
M rs. johnson, "so it is an import-
ant Job to select safe toys and
teach safe habits In uaing them."
