comprising Crowley, Lafayette, Lake
Charles and Orange. Thus far, none
Of fche towtts have been heard from
in reference to the report, which is
reproduced below:
"Two Well, known local base ball
players have received offers during
the past ten days to manage a team
to beestabllshed at Orange this sum
mer, arrangements having been quiet
ly- perfected for. .a base ball league
that will take in that city, Lake
Charles, Lafayette .and Crowley. Both
of the men receiving the offer have
turned it down, but it íb expected that
the management will eventually-land
In the lap of another local man.
"So far no name for the new league
has been arranged, but application-is
to' be established at Orange this sum-
sion for a class D franchise and a
four club league with all cities close
together1 will be perfected: The rail-
road mileage will be small and games
can be arranged with a league of this
character as to reduce the mileage to
the lowest of any league In the coun--
try. ' i
"The Orange people who aré back-
ing the team guarantee a manager and
players six months salary, the man-
ager being offered a personal guaran-

Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. 27.—The
twelfth annual convention"of the Am-
erican National Live Stock Associa-
tion will be held, here January 26, 27,
and 28. In the call, sent out for the
convention, by the president, H. A.
. J as tor, it is stated:
\"Some revision of the tariff will
undoubtedly be attempted by the next
congress and already certain manu-
facturing interests are clamoring for
reduction In the duties on hides, wool
and live stbek. -In all previous tariff
legislation, the. manufacturing inter*
ests, by" reason of intelligent organiza-
tion and persistent effort have been
able to secure many favors to which
they were not justly entitled, and, as
a consequence, our meat food pro-
ducts are barred from many Conti-
nental European countries. In past
years this association has- favored
such reciprocal trade < agreements as
would permit the admission of our
meat products to those countries, and
now 1b the time when the1^ tariff is
Under consideration to secure suph
favorable legislation. The special
comittee, representing the Departí
ments of Agriculture, Bureau of Com-
'merce and Labor and the Treasury,
which went To Europe for the pur-
pose of ascertaining commercial con-
ditions abroad relative to an increas-
ed sale of,our farm and live stock pro
ducts has' returned, and {heir very
elaborate report Will be available for
consideration at our meeting."
ThiB association at its last conven-
tion recomended by an almost unani-
mous vote a bill providing for federal
control of the grazing on the unappro-
. priated public lands In the seml-arld
States and territories of the United
State . That bi,ll was introduced In
the last congress and this winter a
vigorous attempt will be made, to se-
cure Its passage. The necessity for
some intelligent supervision of the
public range, protecting the ranchmen
and conserving at all times the rights
of homesteaders, is daily ' becoming
.more apparent, and the increased dif-
ficulties of a promiscuous use of the
range is continually making new con-
verts to siich policy.

MU8ICAL DRAMA BASED ON OS-
CAR WILDE'S POEM, IN NEW
YORK CITY TONIGHT
Orchestra of Hundred ind Seventeen
Pieces is Requisite to the Complete
, Performance—Alternate Rehearsals
of Various So-Called Choirs of the
Orchestra.
New York, Jan. 28.—Nearly two
months of active preparation will cul-
minate tonight in the production at
■t'lj.e Manhattan Opera House of Rich-
ard Strauss' musical drama based on
Oscar Wilde's poem, "Salome." Re-
hearsals have been going on almost
continuously since the first of Decern-
ber.
The only way in which "Salome's"
indescribably complex score could be
studied by the musicians was by the
alternate rehearsals of the various'
so-called choirs of the orchestra.
Such a combination of Instruments
had never been gotten together be-
fore. For instance, there is a heclt-
lophon, which Strauss conceived and
had designed and made expressly for
use in "Salome." It is a monster
oboe and furnishes the bass to that
plaintive instrument. Maestro Cam-
panlni says it furnishes' a color in
the orchestra which no other instru-
ment can produce.
The contra-bassooft is not a stran-
ger, but one will be Interested to, learn
that instead of four French horns
Strauss Insists upon, six; instead of
three trombones he. demands four;
in stead of two flutes ho must have
three and a piccolo; Instead of two
ordinary.basdoons, three aré required;
whllé the clarinets Include a high E-
flat instrument, a- B-flat clarinet, two
A-flat clarinets and One bass clarinet.
One harp does not satisfy Strauss,
so he must, have two; while, the ce-
leste, an Instrument played like the
piano, but the notes of which are pro-
duced by percussion upon glass, also
has a place of honor in this great or-
chestra. -
Among the other percussion Instru-
menta called for is the biggest bass
drum that could be obtained in New
York. An orchestra of 117 instru-
ments is. requisit eto the complete
performance.
