Gas well blow-out sends
faimfamilies running
Former residents write
Poisonous hydrogen sulfide
gas from a deep well blow-out
last Thursday night, held close
to the ground by low cloud cover
and drifting to the south before
light winds, spurred the evacu-
ation of a score of farm homes in
south central Hemphill County
during the night hours.
The blow-out occurred on the
Trigg Drilling Company's No. 1
McFatter, a deep Hunton test
located about eighteen miles
southeast of Canadian. The test,
slated for 19,000 feet, was
believed to be drilling below
17,000 when the blow-out oc-
curred shortly after 8 o'clock
Thursday night.
High pressure spewed a
lethal concentration of hydrogen
sulfide, and low-hanging clouds
and the light wind sent the gas
drifting at ground level through
the sparsely-settled country-
side.
Warned by officers and by
neighbors, using telephone and
citizens-band radios, an esti-
mated fifty to sixty residents
gathered during the night at
Briscoe School house near the

Hemphill-Wheeler County line.
By morning hours brisk winds
had dispersed the gas and
drilling crews had managed to
reduce the flow, permitting
residents of the area to return to
their homes.
There were no injuries re-
ported from the mishap. Cana-
dian Volunteer Fire Department
crews and officers of the Hemp-
hill County Sheriffs Depart-
ment and DPS were at the scene
and assisted with the warning
and evacuation. State Highway
33 and FM 2654 were closed to
traffic temporarily during the
night as a safety precaution.
Location of the well is in
Section 78, Block 41, H&TC
Survey.
Halliburton Company trou-
ble-shooters from Pampa were
dispatched to the scene to
monitor the flow and pump
drilling mud into the hole to
bring the gas flow under con-
trol.
Dear friends:

notice.

things are sure changing since 1

home town again. Maybe you
could send me a picture of the
whole town. I guess this could
be done, maybe, or maybe not,
so let me know whichever.

PORGIE (GEORGE COLEMAN)
Star Rt. Shoshoni, Wyoming
We can't send George a
picture of "the whole town" in
one piece anymore, it's grown
too much in recent years. But
we'll try to include enough
pictures of various parts of it
during the next year for "Por-
gie" and other sometimes-
homesick former residents to
piece together a pretty good
picture of it. And if old friends
want to write, the Zip code for
Shoshoni is 82649.
