Dr. Lauro F. Cavazos will be
inaugurated as tenth president
of Texas Tech University and
third president of Texas Tech
Health Sciences Center at 3
p.m.. Tuesday, April 15. in the
Lubbock Municipal Auditorium.
In making the announcement
Dr. Charles S. Hardwick. chair-
man of the inaugural Steering
Committee, said that an in-
formal public reception for
President and Mrs. Cava/os
would follow in The Museum of
Texas Tech University.
Cavazos. presently dean of
the Tufts University School of
Medicine in Boston, is the first
alumnus appointed to the presi-
dency of the West Texas school.
He received the B.A. and M.A
degrees from Texas Tech in
1949 and 1951 and Ph. D from
Iowa State University in 1954.
A native Texan. Cava/os was
born in 1927 on the historic King
Ranch, where his father was
foreman of the Santa Gertrudis
Division for 44 years. Mrs.
Cava/os was born in Plainview.
Texas.
Hardwick also announced the

Tom Abraham to be honored by
Freedoms Foundation Feb. 22
Tom Abraham of Canadian
will be honored, along with a
number of other distinguished
Americans, by the Freedoms
Foundation at Valley Forge on
Washington's Birthday, Febru-
ary 22. at Valley Forge.
The Canadian man will re-
ceive one of the Freedoms
Foundation's Principal Awards,
a George Washington Honor
Medal, at the annual awards
ceremony.
His citation reads "Tom
Abraham believes in America.
He believes that man's duty is
to leave the world better than he
found it. During all his life he
has been active in civic affairs,
to the betterment of his com-
munity and the nation."
He was nominated for the
honor by Canadian's Coman*
chena Chapter of theDaughters
of the American Revolution. He
will be in distinguished com-
pan y
Actor James Stewart, singer
John Denver. Ambassador
Shirley Temple Black, and Sen-
ator Jake Garn (R-Utah) will be
among the nationally known
names announced by Freedoms
Foundation at Valley Forge in
its annual Washington's Birth-
day awards ceremony. The
Awards honor Americans in all
walks of life for outstanding
works supporting freedom.
The highest honor. the
George Washington Award, will
be given to noted New Orleans
surgeon Dr Alton Ochsncr.
founder of the Ochsncr Clinic.
The award cites his patriotic
activities, his contributions to
international relations, and his
leadership of younger physi-
cians in addition to his medical
work with lung cancer, chemo-
therapy. and thoracic surgery .
Dr. Ochsncr is an anti-smoking
author and spokesman

Washington's Birthday
Shirley Temple Black. Wtxxl-
side. California, will receive the
American Exemplar Medal for
her life of service to the public
and her country, first as an
entertainer and later as Ambas-
sador to Ghana and in several
other government and private
posts.
Carl Karcher, president of
Carl Karcher Enterprises. Ana
hcim. California, operators of
Carl's jr. Restaurants, will re-
ceive the Private Enterprise
Exemplar Medal (last year
granted to J. Willard Merriott.
sr.). Karcher is cited as one who
has become a hero to many
because of his active involve-
ment in constructive community
affairs and his articulate support
of America and its future.
Kidco Ltd. Ventures also will
receive the Private Enterprise
Exemplar Medal. Kidco, a firm
founded and managed by 14
year old Dickie Cessna of Rom-
ona. California, and his three
sisters, began with a $20 invest-
ment three years ago. This year
their gross income is projected
at 5453,000. including income
from a Warner Brothers motion
picture contract. Their enter-
prise began with a SI50 per
week contract to sweep streets
and a venture to kill gophers in
neighbors' lawns. Thirteen year
old Bette said. "We arc proud
to be Americans. It is hard for
us to understand why so many
adults are always putting down
their country . Some places you
can get shot for doing that."
Another special Freedoms
Foundation award, the Amer-
ican Citizenship Medal, will be
granted to Dr. Michael P.
Marcase. Philadelphia Superin-
tendent of Schools, in recogni-
tion of his efforts to improve
education in the city by encour-
aging greater involvement of
parents. A pan of his work
included the establishment of
DATA-LINE, a telephone num-
ber giving parents access to
help for their children in read-
ing. languages, social studies,
and sciences during the evening
homework hours.
James Stewart w ill be honored
in the category of public ad-
dresses for his speech before
the Los Angeles Philanthropic
Foundation's Annual Award
Dinner. In his speech Stew an
lamented the decline of family
love and religion, saying this
decline is responsible for many
national problems.
