Pleasant Valley Killings - 1897

THE SCENE OF
one of Dallas County's best known farmers and
uncle of Augustus A. Garrison, one of the chief
actors in the affray as well as one of the victims.
A News representative met Mr. McCollum
during the afternoon and obtained from him the
following version of the affair. He said:
"At 11:20 this morning the congregation
of the Pleasant Valley Methodist church
assembled for worship. The Rev. Mr. Patterson

THE SHOOTING

of Ellis county had been advertised to preach
and the attendance was large. I arrived shortly
before the shooting took place and entered the
church, which was filled. A number of young
men were within the church-yard and standing
about the main entrance to the church. Before
the preacher had begun the usual devotional
exercises rapid firing was heard without the
church. I did not witness the shooting, but with
