Happiness does not consist in
where we are but what we are; in
character not condition. *
vSome people who know the right
fail to doit. They seem to think
that the mere knowledge is suffici-
ent.
It is a good thing to keep one's
temper in control, but it- is a sad
thing to have no temper to keep in
control.
It would improve some people
very much if they were as careful
of their character as they are of
their theology.
One may well doubt the religion
of a man who aspires to "mansions
in the skies," but is content to let
his family live in a hovel upon
earth.

How true it is that ''Like moth-
er, like child. The foot that forms
the cradle's motion, the voice that
sings the baby lullaby, the heart
that responds to the child's every
want, the love that teaches the in-
fant prayer are forces |which repre-
sent a personality shaping the
d&tiny of the, child.
The shortening days turn one's
thoughts the long indoors evenings
by the firelight. Blessed is that
home which such tactful wisdom
and common sense prevails that
the children prefer to be at home
than to roam the st reets of an eve-
ning.

How inconsistentv people often
are. They expect their friends to
have no imperfections yet are full
of ;imperfections themselves. If
they love themselves with all their
faults they ough to love their
friends in like m anner.
There is a good deal of cheap
sentimentalisin that sheds tears
readily over the sorrows and trials
of some imaginary hero in a play
br novel, but which does nothing to
help those who are bearing the
actual sorrows of life.
Sadness sometimes follows joy.
But it is soothing to reflect that
sadness also passes even as do the
clouds, and that just as there is
more sunshine than cloud so to the
average man does life bring .far
more joy than sorrow.
