Bullock Urging
Strauss' Defeat
AUSTIN, Tex.— Texas
AFL-CIO President Roy Evans
and Secretary of State Bob
Bullock have asked all mem-
bers of the Democratic Nation-
al Committee to reject Robert
S. Strauss' bid for the party
chairmanship because of his
ties with John Connally.
The two urged Strauss to get
out of the race "if he truly puts
his party above his personal
ambition."
They co-signed a "Dear Fel-
low Democrat" letter to each
national committee members in
a move designed to counter
what Strauss calls his image of
"being the candidate of organ-
ized labor and the South."
"While Strauss is undoubledly
a shrewd politician, his most
consistent use of his talents
over the years has been to ad-
vance the political fortune and
career of his close lifelong
friend, John B. Connally," the
letter said.
Strauss, a Dallas attorney,
was national party treasurer
until the Miami Beach con-
vention that nominated Sen.
George McGovern for the presi-
dent. Connally, former treasury
secretary and Texas governor^
was national chairman of
"Democrats for Nixon" during
the recent campaign, while
Evans and Bullock worked for
McGovern.

HELPFUL ADVICE FOR
THE WOMAN DRIVER
Let's explode a myth right
now: there's no such thing as
a "relaxing" drive if you 're the
driver. A car does nothing to
revive your flagging energies.
If anything, driving at the end
of a long, hard day tends to
adjust our bodily systems to
something less than all-out
"Go."
Knowing this and appreci-
ating what it means indicates
the absolute necessity of sum
moning up every ounce of
concentration you have left
in order to drive your car
safely and well. You can put
yourself in the right gear by
reading the basics on safe
driving and car maintenance
in a new free booklet called,
"Straight Talk for the Woman
Driver." Send your name and
address to Gulf Oil Company-
U.S., P.O. Box 1519-TG.
Houston, Texas 77001.
When we are tired we seek
to recharge our batteries. In
order to do this we have to
pretty much unplug our brains.
And any car driven by an un-
plugged brain is gn unguided -
at best, misguided-missile.
The concept of thousands of
similarly unplugged brains
operating automobiles on any
given evening is enough to
strike terror into the stoutest
heart.
So keep in mind the state
of the machine that is operat-
ing the machine
Have eye, will travel.That's
what the flatfish does with
its traveling eye.

LONDON - Doffing
Mistresses, Fancy Twisters and
Gondola Girls are to get a new
deal in Britain.
And so are Dandy Rovers,
Knocker Offers and Cracker Of-
fers, who have also had a rough
time at the local employment
exchange in the past.
After seven years' work,
Britain's Employment Depart-
ment has coded every job in the
land, from a Minister of the
Crown on down.
The gondola girl, who replen-
ishes the shelves in self-service
stores, becomes 369.99 when
looking for a job The doffing
mistress, who supervises work-
ers removing full packages
from spinning frames, is a
540.99, and the fancy twister,
who twists strands of yarn to
increase their strength, be-
comes a 542.70.
The dandy rover, also in tex-
tiles, takes the code 541.20. The
knocker off and the cracker off,
who, of course, work in the
glass industry, take the codes
619.99 and 614.80 respectively.
Oh, yes, a Minister of the
Crown is a 001.10, while a Mem-
ber of Parliament is a 001.20.
