Hustle Pays Off
For Pizza Vera
SIX POINTER-Angelita A Rocha of RioGrande City shot this
six point buck on Sunday, November 14. the second day of
hunting season in Starr County. She bagged her buck at 8:50
a.m. from :S00 yards with a .222-250 Winchester on El Cerito
Ranch 23 miles "north of Rio Grande City. Her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. I.uz Rocha, and family of 17 are proud of Angelita and look
forward to eating the venison.
Wichita State sees action in
seven night football games this
season.
Ed Halicki of the San Fran-
cisco Giants had a string of 25
scoreless innings this summer.
Arnoldo "Pizza" Vera claims
multiple distinctions on this
year's Pan American
University basketball team.
He's the only senior on Pan
Am's 13-man squad that is
preparing to open its season
November 29 at Baylor
University, then come home to
tackle tough Centenary of
Louisiana on December 1.
Pizza is also the team's only
three-year letterman. And his
nickname earned him
honorable mention nationally
on the Unusual Names Ail-
American picked by Basketball
Weekly out of Michigan.
Big, popular Pizza got that
nickname from his teammates
in 1973 when he worked part-
time at the Edinburg Pizza Hut.
legend has it that Pizza was
disemployed from the Pizza Hut
for eating too much of their
product.
However, the 6 foot 5, 225
pound battler from Rio Grande
City became one of the few PAU
athletes ever to make the squad
as a walk-on. He stuck with the
team week after week and
practiced without a regular
uniform or being listed on the
official roster until his hustle
paid off.
Vera is best known for his
tough defense and strong
rebounding. Playing behind
taller centers, he has con-
tributed to 13-9, 22-2, and 20-5
records.
And Pizza fired the basketball
shot heard 'round South Texas.
Early in 1975 he beat Georgia
State in Atlanta by muscling
down a rebound and scoring a
second before the final buzzer to
bring a dramatic victory, 64-62.
Those were the only points
Pizza scored on that trip out of
Pan Am's 254 total points, yet
he returned home to a hero's
welcome, the goal was timed so
dramatically.
"Pizza isn't the prettiest
basketball player in the world,"
a coach once said, "And he
reminds me of a big ugly bear
out there on the court, but he

might say that Pizza gets the
job done."
Vera lettered in track and
basketball in Rio Grande City
High School.
He has started a few games
for the Broncs in past seasons
although he never has figured to
start on the team that always
has included taller, faster
centers. He remains a tough
back-up man who probably will
see most of his action when the
Broncs encounter some bears to
wrestle this season.
"Pizza never can make a
shot," his friend and former
teammate Jesus Guerra used to
kid him, "unless it really
counts, and then he always
makes it."
Pan Am faces a 17 game
schedule across eight states
plus Mexico. Three of the
Broncs' first four games will be
at home. After visiting Waco
and Baylor November 29, they
will entertain Centenary
December 1, Texas A&I
December 4, and Southern
Mississippi December 6. Then
they travel for three in a row
until January 3.
