"No more school days, no more school days, no
more good old golden rule days. No more readin',
writin', and arithmetic!" This was the new ver-
sion of an old familiar song I heard a little girl
singing this week. School is out for the sunrr er
once again. Classrooms are empty and ihe
schoolyards are deserted. But wait, look again!
The schoolyards are not deserted. On almost any
afternoon, teams of little league baseball players,
adult women and men teams, and sandlot groups
are practicing ball; slides, swings, and other
playground equipment are in use by children by
all shapes and sizes; enthusiastic joggers are
panting and plodding along; skate boarders zip
along the sidewalks; and all manner of activity is
going on. And this is the way it should be. It is a
sad thing to see scnool grounds enclosed with tall
fences topped with barbed wire, all the facilities
forbidden ground. But this is the way it may have
to become if those that use these well-equipped,
well kept, and best-of-all, free areas feel that they
can abuse the areas as they use them. Paved
basketball courts with adjustable goals at one
school have been rendered useless by people who
have nothing better to do than swing from them
like monkeys instead of tossing balls into them.
Most of the windows at some schools are covered
completely with plywood, obviously to escape
vandalism. What can we do? Take care of these
facilities and speak up if you see someone else
who's not. Tell them to stop or report them to
someone who can do something about it. Let's not
lose the right to use these areas for outings with
our families and friends! Let's have a happy and
constructive, not destructive, summer!
