Starr County Youth Fair
Queen To Be Named Sunday
A Starr County Youth F'air
Queen will be named at the
fourth annual Queen's
Contest scheduled for this
Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the
Rio Grande City High School
Auditorium.
Serving as chairman for
the event, co-sponsored by
the F lorence J. Scott Study
Club of Rio Grande City and
the Starr County 4-H
Parents' and Leaders' Club,
is Mrs. Pancho Cummings.
She announced that judging
will be based on poise,
personality, beauty, and
appropriateness of costume,
which will be Western style.
The 1979 queen, who will
be crowned by last year's
queen, Marisela Lydia
Garza, will reign over the
Starr Conty Youth Fair
during the week that follows.
She will ride in the parade on
Saturday morning, March ,'S.
Entertainment will be a
part of the evening, with
talent furnished by local
singers, dancers, and
musicians and by members
of the Study Club. The public
is invited to attend, and door
prizes will be given during
the evening.
Among those competing
for the title are the following
high school girls: Petty Ana
Barrera, sixteen year old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Guadalupe E. Barrera. She
is a sophomore at Rio
Grande City High School and
is sponsored by the
sophomore class.
Daisy Bazan is a senior at
Rio Grande City High
School, and she is sponsored
by the senior class. She is the
eighteen year old daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Eligio
Bazan.
Sonya Saenz is the fifteen
year old daughter of Mr and
Mrs. Bias M. Saenz ' A
sophomore at San Isidro
High School, she is spon-
sored by the San Isidro High
School cheerleaders.

Rio Grande City High

Barrel Painting Contest Set
Area youth groups may
earn money and "have a
barrel of fun doing it"
through a contest being
sponsored by the Rio Grande
Valley Livestock Show.
It's the Keep America
Beautiful Barrel Painting
Contest," and it is open to
F'F'A and F'HA Chapters, 4-H
Clubs. Girl Scout and Boy
Scout Troops in Cameron,
Starr, Willacy and Hidalgo
Counties.
Mrs Frances Cooper,
show manager, said the
deadline for entries is March
1st, and that the barrels will
be judged on March 10, the
Saturday preceding the
Marc h 14-18 show.
Prizes will be awarded on
an increasing scale ac-
cording to the number of
entries, she said. If there are
41 or more entries, the top
prize will be $55 and a
trophy. Other prizes will be
$45 for second place, $35 for
third; $25 for fourth place;
$15 for fifth place, and $5 for
sixth place.
If fewer groups enter
barrels in the judging the
prizes will be slightly less.
Mrs. Cooper said that each
organization would furnish
its own 55-gallon drum type
barrel, with top cut out and
no sharp edges exposed. The
barrels should be clean and
in good condition, and should

Funeral services were
held on Friday, February 16,
in San Isidro Catholic
Church for Mrs. Marta F.
Villarreal, 94, who died
Wednesday afternoon in
Retama Rest Manor,
Harlingen, after a prolonged
illness.
Burial followed in El
Coyote Cemetery, Delmita.
The body lay in state at the
Ceballos F'uneral Home, Rio
Grande City, until time of
services.
Mrs. Villarreal was a
resident of Delmita most of
her life.
She is survived by two
sons, Julio Villarreal of
Corpus Christi and Eutimio
Villarreal of Delmita; two
daughters, Mrs. Felix Garza
and Mrs. Rodolfo Garza of
Delmita. a brother, Juan
Farias of Delmita; three
sisters, Manuel F De ljeon,

carries out a Western theme,
and painting must be done
by members of the
organization entering the
barrel in the contest.
Completed barrels should
be delivered to the
showgrounds just north of
Mercedes by 9:30 a.m.
March 10th, and they will be
judged at 10 a.m. All barrels
will belong to the livestock
show, and will remain on
exhibit and in use during the
show. Other non-profit
organizations may borrow
them during the year.
Mrs. Cooper said that
entry blanks have been
mailed to organization of-
ficers where addresses were
known, and that other blanks
may be secured by con-
tacting the show office,
