THE KIO GRANDE HERALD
THURSDAY. AUGUST 9. 1979 PAGE 3
BUSY YOUTH- C.Y.O. members were busy last week giving the rusty grotto
fence a like-new look. Standing, left to right, are Teresa Resendez, Paul i^ibar, Lauro
Ramirez, and Teresa Lopez. Mariana Resendez is shown kneeling. The Grotto is a
historic site in Rio Grande City.
I made my first entry
into Rio Grande City on
New Year's Day 1925. 1
had spent the night in a
famous inudhole known
at the time as "Sal Si
Puede"(Get out if you
can!".) I walked nine
miles in to town the next
morning after not having
eaten for twenty hours.
It was my study of the
area that influenced me
to come back to the Rio
Grande Valley six years
later. While in the Valley
I met Willie Zac Drurn-
mond, a woman lawyer
who was working with the
law firm that was par-
titioning the land where
my company had the
leases. We were married
on September 1st, 1927.
From South Texas 1
went to Western
Venezuela where I spent
almost three years. My
two children were born in
that country. The
depression of the 1930's
caught us in South
America but the Oil
Company kept us on the
payroll for almost two
years. Finally they let
everybody go. I found
myself back in the United
States without a job and
no prospects of getting
one I owned some
property in Oklahoma
City but I had no
prosepcts of finding a
buyer. I had saved up
some money so I decided
to do some graduate work

in Micro-Paleontology as'
it was not taught while I
was in college before.
This seemed a rather silly
thing to do but it proved to
be very valuable when I
returned to the Rio
Grande Valley in 1953.
Through Micropal-
eontology I discovered
the great Fordyce-
Vanderbilt Fault and I
persuaded Otto Woods to
drill a well there. It took
us almost six months to
drill to about 2736 feet.
We had a junk rig that
seldom drilled more than
three hours a day without
breaking down. By-
unusual luck I foretold
the depth of the producing
sand within six feet.The
driller told me that if I
said that the sun would
come up in the west next
morning-he would look
for it there. There had
been drilled a dry hole
about one-eighth mile
from our prospect that
had given me my in-
formation.
The wildcat that
brought in the Boyle Field
was drilled within 100
yards from a dry hole. An
operator made the
remark that "I wish the
s.o.b. wouldn't drill right
next to my dry holes!"
He didn't realize that his
well gave me the in-
formation I needed.
By the year 1952 the oil
business was in a strange
condition. We were
producing a great deal of
oil but we faced a big
shortage. At a geological
convention in San Antonio
the fact came out that we
had found all the oil
structures in the United
States that were easy to
find and that we faced a
lack of new places to drill.
At that time we could buy
oil from foreign countries
as cheaply as we could
produce it. Operators
were junking practically
new rigs. The first sad
blow was felt about in
1973. Then the Arabs and
the Venezuelans realized
that they had us where
they wanted us. The
people of the United
States had always had
plenty of oil and they
wouldn't believe that they
were running out.
In 1953 I spent the
summer in Europe as my
daughter was living in
I/jndon and my son was
in Germany. When I
returned to the United
States the oil business
ho pel
Tnre
out of it. Three years ago
I realized that it was time
to get back into the game
but due to iny wife's
illness I didn't find it
possible. The cost of
drilling has gone up four
times and land owners
have an exaggerated idea
of the value of their
leases.
