New and long sought
records were again set by
only four known screwworm
infestations in Texas during
July, says Dr. James E.
Novy.
The Director of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture
(USDA) Screwworm
Laboratory says the four
known Texas screwworm
cases during July are the
fewest ever recorded in that
month during the 18 year
history of the program.
The year's total of 24 ir
Texas through July also sets
a new all time low, notes
Novy.
Case numbers are also low
in other southwestern states
with 13 tallied this year in
New Mexico, 24 in Arizona,
and one in California.
Latest screwworm sample
identified from the Kar-
nese-DeWitt County out-
break was collected June 29
from a calf navel northwest
of Cuero by Edwin J. Sinast.
It reached the lab and was
officially identified July 1.
On July 5 three samples
collected from calf navels 30
miles northwest of Sierra
Blanca in Hudspeth County
were identified. They had
been collected July 1 by Ed
A. Mosely.
Both areas have been
treated with release of
sterile screwworm flies and
release of Screwworm Adult
Suppression System
(SWASS) pellets. The
pellets contain a chemical
which attracts screwworm
flies and an insecticide laced
feeding bait. They are
designed to quickly reduce
populations of adult
screwworm flies so the
sterile male release
technique can be most ef-
fective.
