What an exciting thing it was last week to
see the children from all our schools com-
peting in the annual district-wide track
meet. Oh, the thrill of victory and the agony
of defeat that was evidenced. And the
children experienced the full gamut of these
feelings, from thrill to agony. Some spec-
tators were appalled at the faces of those
who were running, (or jumping, or tugging,
or sack racing, or whatever). For what
showed in their faces was the intensity of
their efforts. Each one was pushing his or
herself to the very limits of their ability.
And for this, each one was a winner in my
estimation. I saw a lot of winners out there
those two days, but very few losers were to
be found. The only losers were those who
half-heartedly tried because they felt
defeated before they began. In a track
meet, as in life, the real winners are those
who try their very best to be their very best,
whether or not it's better than anybody
else's best. "To be the best that you can
be..." this is a perfect motto for a real
winner.

Social Security
Report Approaches
People receiving social security benefits
who earned more than the annual exempt
amount in wages or self-employment during
1979 have until April 15, 1980, to file an
annual report of their earnings, Jose J.
Trevino, social security district manager in
McAllen, said recently.
The 1979 annual exempt amount was
$3,480 for people under 65 all of the year and
$4,500 for people 65 or over. In general, a
person has $1 in benefits withheld for each
$2 of annual earnings over the exempt
amount.
The annual report is used by the Social
Security Administration to determine
whether the person received the correct
amount of benefits during 1979.
