Roma Student
Representing County
In Exhibit
Domingo Toscano, seventh grade
art student from Roma Jr. High, is
representing Starr County in a
special Texas Sesquicentennial
childrens art exhibition called
"Hands Around Texas."
The "Hands Around Texas''
showcase is to be an exhibition
highlighting Texas County history
It will feature one drawing from
each of the 254 counties of Texas
created by a student depicting the
past, present, and/or future of their
county.
The purpose of the exhibition
and its state wide tour event the
next few years - is to provide
children in Texas an opportunity to
make a positive, active investment
of themselves in the celebration of
our state's hitory while at the same
time to create a mechanism
through which Texas young people
can reaffirm their own values as a
Texas citizen.
One piece of art from each
county will be placed in an exhibit
that will open in Bastrop, Texas in
May of 1986 This exhibit will then
travel Texas being exhibited in
each county for one month
Already the exhibit is reserved
by the City of Dallas as its featured
exhibition during the two month
tenure of the State Fair in 1986.
Each county exhibitor will re-
ceive a special certificate of merit
and be invited to the Ses-
quicentennial exhibition opening in
May.
Each piece of art exhibited will
become the property of "Hands
Around the World" and will be
included in exhibits that travel the
world on a continuing basis
Domingo's drawing depicts ma-
jor historical buildings in Stan-
County, the old Roma bridge
steamboats on the river, major
industries such as ranching,
agriculture, and oil. the influence
of the Mexican Culture, and even
the filming of "Viva Zapata."
All this is skillfully blended
together with in the forms of two
Mexican Cowboys on horseback It
is done on illustration board using
a prisma-pencil-color media. He
will duplicate this creation in
another pencil color media to be
exhibited in the upcoming Starr
County Fair in March.
Doming is under the instruction
and supervision of Mr. Ismael E.
