On Halloween night, a youth
group from different areas of the
county was organized by Mrs.
Nidia G. Guillen to assist the
Retama Manor Nursing Home
patients in Rio Grande City with
their "Door-to-Door Knocking
Adventure.
The group consisted of Homero J.
"Javi" Gsrza of La Rosita; Ryan
Anthoy Guiilsn, Kimberly Ann
Guillen, Valerie Ann Garcia, Nellie
Ann Garcia, Noel Garcia, Jr.,
Vilma Rodriguez, Armandina
Garza, and Zulema Galvan of Rio
Grande City; Annette Flores, Sixto
Flores III, Melissa Flores, Azeneth
Flores, Hector Flores, and Lizette
Flores of Rincon.
A week prior to the activity,
some of the members attended an
orientation by Carmen Garcia,
Activities Director; and Lillie
Guerrero, Assistant Administrator.
Brieted on the procedure to be
followed, the members were
assigned categories: controller,
tour guides, and advertising
supervisors.
Dressed in Halloween costumes
to celebrate the activity, the youth
group members guided over 1000
children and parents down each
hallway to every patient's room for
candy.
Over 25,000 pieces of candy were
handed out by the patients, who
enjoyed a knocking trick-or-treat
adventure for the first time at the
nursing home. Bypassing their own
trick-or-treat activities, the youth
group expressed their desire to
assist the patients with similar
activities next year.
Assisting Mrs. Guillen with
supervision of the group were Mrs.
Dolly Flores, Mrs. Veronica
Garcia, and Mrs. Antonia
Rodriguez. The activity was
planned and organized by Sharie
Smith, Retama Manor Ad-
ministrator.

NEW YORK — Thoroughbred
race horses are measured from their
hooves to their withers, not all the way
to their heads. The average height of
a thoroughbred is 15 hands from the
ground to the withers, roughly the
equivalent of human shoulders.
Horse people consider that one hand
is about the same as four inches, which
means the average horse is about 5 feet
tall. The average weight of a race horse
varies between about 1,000 pounds and
1,200.
