The American Association of
University Women met at the home
of Mrs. Juanita Moreno in Roma at
7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23.
In the absence of Mrs. Armandina
Villarreal, President, Mrs. Oralia
Pena, Vice-President, presided over
the meeting. After Mrs. Pena
welcomed all members, Miss Mona
Trigo introduced Miss Perla Moody
from San Benito. The minutes were
read by Secretary Elia Ramos and
were approved as read. Mrs. Marta
Moreno gave the financial report.
After new and old business, Mrs.
Pena introduced the Guest Speaker,
Pangrsi Tamthong from Thailand.
Ms. Tamthong is a Foreign
Exchange Teacher under the
American Field Service
International Program and will
reside with Mr. and Mrs. Horacio
Paul Guerra 111 here in Rio Grande
City during the 1989-90 school
year. She is working with a Master
Teacher in the English Department
in the local High School.
She assists her assigned teacher
and speaks to classes at all levels
on Thailand, prepared to interpret
the history, customs and arts of her
country.
Ms. Tamthong danced the Thai
classical dance. See We Chac.
She wants to impart knowledge
of her country people and culture to
all whom she meets in America and
is very much interested in
improving her English and getting
some new techniques in teaching.
She is from Kanchanaburi,
Thailand, not very far from
Bangkok. She finished high school
at Ampornpinsarn School in
Bangkok and continued her
education in Ramkumhaeng
University where she received her
degree.
Collecting stamps, coins,
ashtrays and shells are Ms.
Tamthong's hobbies. Ms.
Tamthong owns a little boutique in
her hometown.
Ms. Tamthong thinks that she
should continue studying English.
Ms. Tamthong spoke about their
culture and cultural achievements in
education and religion and stated
that most the Thai people are
Buddhists. The head of the state is a
King and his title is Lord of Life.
The next meeting will be at the
home of Miss Mona Trigo on
February 27.
The meeting was then adjourned
and all members proceeded to enjoy
a delicious dinner prepared by the
hostesses.

Women Hold Meeting
Mrs. Diana Peterson, president,
opened the February meeting of St.
John United Women at the Church
Thursday by reading Psalms L.
She presented the program for the
morning on "A gift of Hope" from
Romans 1-5. She stated that when
there is total a darkness, there is
always some small light to be
found. As it is with God, he always
worked within us to give us hope.
Hostesses for the meeting were
Mesdames Clara Dudley, Linda
Northrop, Rosctta Kazda, and
Dcloses Nesloney. The table was
decorated with the Valentineiheme.

cookies were served to the
members.
During the business meeting,
Helen Shuford, treasurer, gave the
report and gave the budget for the
year. It was moved that $700 be
donated to the Cemetery Fund for
new plants at the Cemetery since so
many had frozen during the last
freeze.
Benilde Villarreal, Christian
Global Concern chairman, reported
on her work at the Jail and
Camargo Methodist Church. She
stated that the group was so pleased
with the Bibles in Spanish which
are to be given to prisoners. She
stated that Rev. Sandifer had
obtained 48 Bibles from the Bible
Society.
Mrs. Eleanor Payne reported that
she has been sending cards, and it
was reported that Mrs. Bernice
Warren is taking favors to the
Nursing Home. Mrs. Oralia Pena,
Project Chairman, reported that
plans are in the making to have a
table at the Flea Market soon.
After reports of the other
Chairmen, the meeting closed with
prayer.

The Pan American Round Table
January program on Trinidad and
Tabago was presented by Mrs. J.M.
Y/aguirrc.
Mrs. Roger Williams said the
invocation prior lo I he dinner which
was enjoyed by llJ members at 7:00
p.m. on Jan. 9 at the Fori Ringgold
Motor Inn.
Mrs. Javier C. Ramirez led in the
pledge of allegiance; she also
introduced two student guests Iroin
Roma High School: Miss Herlinda
Gar/a, the 17-year old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Marin Garza.
Herlinda has participated in
numerous activities during her lour
years of high school which include
holding office in the Annual Stall
and Spanish Club.
She has been in the Honor Roll
four years; was named to Who's
Who Among High School
Students; Society of Distinguished
American High School Students:
received the I niicd Stales National
Leadership Merit Award.
She won first place in District
Level in Choir Solo; lias competed
in UIL prose and typing. Herlinda
has had perfect attendance during
two of her High School years.
She has been a member of the
Student Council lor three years and
National Honor Society and is also
a member of the Literary Club. She
plans to attend UTSA and obtain a
degree in Communications.
The other siudeni guest, Gustavo
Valenciana. is the son ol Mrs.
Blanca Valenciana ol Roma.
Gustavo is president ol the Senior
Class and also served as president
his Junior year; and was treasurer
his Freshmen and Sophomore
years. He is member of the Student
Council and has made lhe honor
roll all lour years of High School.

and 10 Distinguished American
High School Students as well as
National Honor Society. He
received the United States National
Leadership Merit Award.
He has been a member of the
band three years, FI A one year and
has played basketball his Freshmen
year Junior Varsity and Varsity. He
plans to pursue a career in
medicine.
Mrs. J.M. Yzaguirre presented a
most interesting program on
Trinidad and Tabago. two islands
that regard themselves one as
manifested in the following

The two islands take pride in
their atmosphere ol racial and
religious harmony. Even though
since the discovery ol these island
by Columbus in !4()8 they were
conquered and abandoned, pillaged,
settled and developed by people
from all parts of the globe.
The complex multi-three culture
of the new state reflects several
centuries ol European exploration,
colonial power struggles and the
importation of slaves from Africa
and Asia and indentured laborers to
work on the plantations.
Spain's interest were centered on
the mineral rich areas so, except for
