heard the late i report on the
hospital's efforts to revive the
Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN)
school.
Administrator Thalia Munoz

Munoz added, "The students
would do their clinical work in
Starr County, but the instructional
work would be in McAllen. She
talked about getting a van to
transport stucents to McAllen. At
least it sounds very positive."
The planned expansion of the lab
was discussed in detail. Munoz said,
"We had a discussion with the
architect." Architect Delfino Garza,
Jr., of Laredo said, "We prepared the
plans and specifications for the
addition. We need to carry out some
interviews to see what the needs
are, and to make sure we have
incorporated all the requirements."
Garza added, "You can do all this
in phases or all at once. The fee is
based on the final bid. We use the
cost estimate as a guide." Munoz
noted that the planned expansion
would be 20 by 80 feet. A motion
was then passed authorizing the
architect to begin preparing plans
for the expansion.
In giving the Quality Assurance
Report Munoz noted that for
several months in a row the
hospital has had at least 60 percent
occupancy. She said, "We l\ad an
average daily census of 31 in
February. A total of 608 persons
visited the emergency room in
February."
The Quality Assurance Report
followed an extremely lengthy
presentation by National Revenue
Corporation that lasted between 60
and 90 minutes. The corporation
was proposing to take over the
hospital's efforts to collect overdue
accounts.
The representative of the group
said, "The Valley is the last portion
of the U.S. that we're going to
market. We've collected more
money for medical accounts than
anyone else in the U.S. Thirty three
percent of our business is in the
medical field."
'My mom just gavt
the best present
She read to me."
If a fairy talc doesn i sound much like a
present, imagine it's the first one your
mom has ever read to you. Imagine that
for as long as you can remember, she
hasn't even known how to read.
Thousands of adult in the Valley can't
read past a fifth-grade level. They don't
understand newspapers, street signs or
simple written instructions.
These people will never reach their full
potential until they learn this basic skill.
That's why thr Literacy Centers of the
Valley have developed a program to help
adults learn to read.
But the centers need tutors. People like
you who can volunteer three hours a
week to help those who want to learn.
Please, volunteer your time. And help
someone give a child the best present
ever.

Just because your system is

use more energy. And, that means
higher utility bills.
An Annual Spring Tune-Up can
help you save energy. With the hot
summer months just ahead, now's
the perfect time to have your system
