Rattler baseball aims to
continue winning tradition
By KENNETH ROBERTS
Managing Editor
The Rio Grande City High
School baseball program has been
one of the finest in the Rio Grande
Valley the last two years, and the
1993 varsity team, blessed with
many experienced and talented
returning players along with many
promising newcomers, is striving
to achieve even greater glory.
The Rattlers have reached the
state playoffs the last two seasons
as the second place representative
from District 31-5A. In 1992, the
Rattlers achieved an 11-4 district
record and reachcd the state playoffs
with a dramatic 5-3 victory over the
PSJA Bears in a special playoff
game to determine the second place
playoff representative.
The Rattlers, who had a 21-8
overall record in 1992, lost a tight
and controversial 4-3 decision to
Brownsville Porter in the bi-district
playoff round.
Rattler Head Coach George
Cabasos commented, "Our fans are
excited. The kids are sky high in
morale and enthusiasm. They see
winning as a tradition, and they
want to do even better. They're
enjoying themselves and practicing
hard."
About the Rattlers' prospects this
year, Cabasos declared, "As long as
we play quality baseball on a
consistent basis, we have as good a
chance as anyone. We have good
talent and ability on this team."
Cabasos added, "It looks like a
promising year. We have six
returning starters, and experience
always means a lot. We have the
potential to be as good or better
than last year."
The Rattlers began their 1993
season at home on Tuesday, Feb.
23 with a 3-2 victory over the
Zapata Hawks, currently ranked
sixth in the state in Class 3-A. Rio
pitcher Joe Briscno struck out 13
hitters, and junior designated hitter
Dimas Garza hit a crucial
game-tying double off the
ccntcrfield wall.
Cabasos noted, "The season will
undoubtedly be successful if we
have a quality number three and
number four pitcher. The district

will be a long haul with 18 district
games instead of 14...Our main
need is for a number three and
number four pitcher."
The Rattlers were scheduled to
open their District 31-5 A campaign
on Tuesday night, March 2 against
the Mission Eagles on the road.
The Rattlers won one of three
games at the Flour Bluff
Tournament in the Corpus Christi
area from Thursday through
Saturday.
On Thursday, the Rattlers
defeated Port Lavaca 2-1 as starting
pitcher Dimas Garza went the
distance and allowed only four hits.
Rio's Juan Landa went 2 for 3 with
a double and two runs batted in.
On Friday, the Raulers lost a 6-2
decision to Flour Bluff. Juan Landa
was the starting pitcher and was
charged with the loss. Rio had only
two hits and Flour Bluff was
limited to five hits.
On Saturday, Beeville edged the
Rattlers 3-2 in 10 innings. The
Trojans scored the winning run in
the 10th inning on a two-out single
with the bases loaded.
Roger Campos started for the
Rattlers and pitched into the ninth
inning, striking out 10 Beeville
hitters. Joe Briseno relieved in the
ninth and was charged with the
loss.
Rio catcher Marco Bazan went 2
tor 4 with a triple and one run
batted in.
Cabasos commented, "We have a
little more power at the plate this
year than in previous years. We're
going to have a lot of contact
hitters that can spray the ball into
the alleys for extra-base hits. Like
the last two years, we should have a
lot of doubles and triples."
The coach predicted, "I think we
may have a little more speed this
year. We're going to use this speed
to our advantage. We're going to be
stealing bases and utilizing the
hit-and-run when possible."
Cabasos emphasized, "Our
pitching looks good. Roger
Campos has looked good in the
scrimmages. He has excellent
velocity and a good breaking ball."
About the defensive outlook,
Cabasos declared, "We have a pretty
good defense. Shorstop Roger
Campos is as good defensively as
any shortstop in the district. Our
defense should be a team strength."
The leader of the pitching staff
will be senior righthander Joe
Briseno, who achieved a 10-4 record
and 2.30 earned run average on his
way to first team All-District
honors.
Cabasos, noting that Briseno has
won 18 games in two years,
commented, "He's very poised. He
has excellent control and spots the
ball very well. He continues to
make steady improvement."
Righthander Roger Campos, a
senior, is also expected to provide
quality pitching for the Rattlers.
Cabasos called Campos "an
aggressive pitcher who will
challenge any batter. He has a good
fastball and an excellent breaking
ball. He has looked overpowering
in the scrimmages."
Cabasos indicated that one of the
Rattlers' greatest priorities is
looking for quality pr. rs in the
number three and four '•>!< in the
rotation,
Cabasos noted that inior
righthander Dimas Gar/a hat 10-0
record with the junior var-.i-. in
1992. T he coach termed Gar/a a
Briseno-type pitcher who spots the
ball very well and has outstanding
offspced pitches. With a little
experience, he should be a very
tough pitcher."
The coach declared that
sophomore righthander Salvador
Hernandez "has been showing a lot
of poise in the scrimmages. He's
been throwing a lot of strikes."
Senior righthander Robbie
Vasquez is another pitching
prospect. Cabasos said, "He throws
strikes on a consistent basis."
Senior shortstop Roger Campos
will be the Rattlers' leadoff hitter.
Campos pounded away at enemy
pitchers for a .436 baiting average
in 1992.
Cabasos said of Campos, "He's
an excellent contact hitter who's
hard to strike out. He can make
things happen on the bases. He can
spray the ball to all fields"
Centerfielder Robbie Vasquez
will be batting second. Cabasos
said, "He's a good bunter. He's a
good contact hitter."
Senior second baseman-pitcher
Joe Briseno will be hitting third for
the Rattlers. Cabasos commented,
"He's been among the district's
leading hitters the last iwo years. ^
He is a tremendous producer when
runners are on base. He stings the
ball with authority into the alleys."
In 1992, Briseno batted at a .365
clip in district play and .314 for the
entire season.
Senior Casimiro Oiivarez is
expected to play left field and be the
Rattlers' cleanup hitter. The coach
emphasized, "He's improved «
tremendously as a hitler. He's
making more contact this year. He's
capable of hitting the ball out of
the park."
The Rattlers' number five hitter
will be senior third baseman
Miguel Villarreal. Villarreal
slammed a crucial home run and
double in Rio's 5-3 victory over the
PSJA Bears that enabled the •
Rattlers to achieve a slate playoff
berth in 1992.
Cabasos commented about
Villarreal, "He's an offensive
igniter. He's hard to strike out and
is capable of driving the ball out of
the park. He's a great contact hitter
and is an aggressive player on tho
base paths. He's an excellent
defensive player at third base." •
Villarreal batted .333 in district
play and .276 for the entire 1992
season.
Senior catcher Marco Ba/an will
bat sixth and be a Rattler starter for
the third straight season. Cabasos
said of Bazan, "He's a good leader
who does an excellent job of
guiding the pitchers. He will be a
deadly offensive threat if he m
maintains consistency. He usually
hits a lot of doubles. He's
tremendous behind the plate on
defense."
In 1992, Bazan batted .342 in
district play and .382 for the entire
season. He received second team
Ail-District honors in 1992 and
third team All-District recognition
in 1991. •
Sophomore Salvador Hernandez
is one of two candidates for the
right field position and the seventh*
spot in the Rattler batting order.
Cabasos said of Hernandez, "He's
showing a lot of poise at the plate.
He makes good contact and is
capable of hitting the ball a long
way. He's got good speed and good ^
range in the outfield."
