Eagles' second half explosion defeats Rattlers 42-21
By KENNETH ROBERTS
Managing Editor
The Mission Eagles used a
21-point third quarter explosion,
triggered by the pinpoint passing of
quarterback Danny Flores, to defeat
the Rio Grande City Rattlers 42-21
in a District 31-5A contest at Tom
Landry Stadium in Mission Friday
evening.
With their victory, the Eagles
avenged defeats at the hands of the
Rattlers the last two seasons. The
Rattlers handed the defending
district champion Eagles their only
district defeat of the 1993 season
with a 39-33 triumph in Rio
Grande City.
The Rattlers trailed only 14-13
early in the third quarter, but Flores
suddenly ran 39 yards for a
touchdown and unleashed scoring
passes of 13 and 73 yards to put the
game out of reach.
Flores threw touchdown passes of
45 and 38 yards to give the Eagles a
14-7 halftime lead. Flores was
responsible for five of the Eagles'
six touchdowns as he passed for
four touchdowns and ran for
another. Ronnie Cavazos was
Flores' favorite target with seven
catches for 169 yards.
The Rattlers provided their own
offensive fireworks with 438 yards
of total offense. Alex Perez motored
93 yards for an electrifying fourth
quarter touchdown, and Eric
Rodriguez threw scoring passes of
41 and 17 yards to Eddy Martinez.
Martinez also added 109 yards
rushing to the Rattler offensive
output.
Rodriguez achieved 226 yards
passing for the Rattlers and several
pass plays narrowly missed
connecting for big yardage and
probable touchdowns.
Six turnovers, however,
prevented the Rattlers from
unleashing further damage against
the Eagle defense.
The Eagles did not rely solely on
their passing game as they rushed
for 197 yards. Running back Joe
Segundo was the leading rusher
with 74 yards and Fiores chipped in
with 46 yards.
The Rattler defense did stop
Mission without points on three
occasions in the first half when the
Eagles had a first down inside the
Rio 20.
The Eagles struck quickly on the
game's opening possession by
driving 72 yards for a score in three
plays. On second and three, Joe
Segundo thundered through the
middle for a 20-yard gain to the Rio
45.
On the next play, quarterback
Danny Flores lofted a high, arching
pass down the left sideline that
Ronnie Cavazos caught inside the
20, and the Eagle receiver raced into
the end zone for a 45-yard scoring
reception with 10:54 remaining in
the first quarter. The successful
extra point kick gave the Eagles an
early 7-0 lead.
The Rattlers quickly responded
with a scoring drive on their first
possession. The bouncing kickoff
was returned to the Rio 39 and a
personal foul penalty against the
Eagles moved the ball to the
Mission 46. On second down, Eddy
Martinez look a handoff around
right end for a 12-yard gain to the
34. Alex Perez then hammered
through the right side for an
eight-yard gain to the 21.
A short time later, the Rattlers
found themselves facing a fourth
and six situation at the Eagle 17.
Quarterback Eric Podriguez rolled
to his right and drilled a perfect pass
inside the 5 to Martinez, who
scampered into the end zone for a
17-yard scoring pass with 8:12
remaining in the first period.
Ramon Ortiz booted the extra point
to deadlock the game at 7-7.
The Eagles seemed primed to
score again after a personal foul
penalty against the Rattlers on the
kickoff moved the ball to the Rio
43. Danny Elizondo pounded out an
11-yard gain to the 32, and Flores
sprinted around light end for a
six-yard gain and a first down at the
21.
On third down from the 15, the
Rattlers nearly intercepted a pass
inside the 5. On fourdi down, the
Eagles lined up for an apparent field
goal attempt, but tried to pass for
the first down. A heavy Rio rush,
however, deflected the pass and a
Rattler defender intercepted the ball
at the 28.
On third down from the Rio 20,
Rodriguez rolled to his left, but was
heavily rushed and his pass was
intercepted near the left sideline at
the 30 and returned to the 18.
The Rattler defense, however,
stopped an Eagle running play for a
three-yard loss and forced two
incomplete passes. On fourth down,
an Eagle receiver caught a pass in
the deepest part of the end zone but
came down outside the boundary
and the Rattlers took over on downs
at the 21.
On second and 11, Rodriguez
connected with Martinez across the
middle at the 30 and the Rattler
tailback exploded toward the right
sideline and raced all the way to the
Eagle 40 for a 40-yard reception.
On third and 10, however, the Eagle
defense stopped a Rattler running
play for a five-yard loss at the 45.
On their next possession, the
Rattlers found themselves on their
own 5 after a Mission punt. On
third and inches from the 15, Perez
was stopped for a loss on a sweep
to the left and was stripped of the
ball, with the Eagles recovering at
the Rio 9.
On first down, however, a Flores
pass across the middle was
intercepted by a Rattler defender at
the 2.
On third and five from the 7,
fullback Ismael Rivera took a
swing pass for big yardage down
the right sideline and cut back to
the left before finally being tackled
at the Mission 41 for a 52-yard
reception. On the next play,
however, an Eagle defender made a
diving interception at the Mission
19.
Later in the second quarter,
quarterback Brian Jackson began a
Mission scoring strike with a
23-yard keeper around left end to the
Rattler 38.
On second and 10, Danny Flores
arched a deep pass across the middle
that Greg Haring caught inside the
10 and the Eagle receiver scampered
into the end zone for a 38-yard
scoring reception with 2:57
remaining in the first half. The
extra point kick extended Mission's
lead to 14-7.
The Rattlers moved to their 49
after a personal foul penalty against
the Eagles, but Rodriguez was
sacked on third down for a six-yard
loss at the 44. The two teams then
went into intermission with
Mission owning a 14-7 advantage.
The Rattlers took the second half
kickoff and quickly drove 66 yards
for a touchdown. A personal foul
penalty set the Rattlers back to
their 31, but Martinez caught a pass
across the middle for a 10-yard gain
and Vivian Amador pounded out a
four-yard gain to the 45 for a first
down. On the next play, Perez
motored through the left side for a
14-yard gain to the Eagle 41.
On first and 10, Rodriguez rolled
to his right and threw a deep pass
down the right sideline and
Martinez made a leaping catch
between two defenders at the 2 and
lunged just across the goal line for
a 41-yard scoring reception with
9:27 remaining in the third quarter.
The Eagles maintained a 14-13 edge
when the extra point attempt was
wide to the left.
The Eagles swiftly responded
with a 62-yard scoring thrust. On
second down, Ronnie Cavazos took
a swing pass down the left sideline
for a 14-yard gain to midfield.
On first and 10, Flores dropped
back to pass, raced to his right,
evaded several defenders at the Rio
35 and suddenly found himself
behind the Rattler defense as he
raced down the right sideline for a
39-yard scoring run with 7:43
remaining in the third quarter. The
successful conversion gave the
Fugles a 21-13 lead.
Perez attempted to ignite the
visitors with a 14-yard gain to the
Rio 37, which left the Rattlers
eight yards shy of a first down. On
third down, Rodriguez was sacked
and stripped of the ball while
rolling to the left and the Eagles
recovered on the Rio 24.
Three plays later, Flores rolled to
the right and connected with Jesse
Campos in the right corner of the
end zone for a 13-yard scoring pass
with 4:13 remaining in the third
period. The successful conversion
boosted Mission's lead to 28-13.
On the ensuing possession, the
Rattlers found themselves inches
shy of a first down at their 37 and
facing a fourth down sitution. The
Rattlers gambled and Vivian
Amador achieved the first down by
inches just past the 37.
Martinez then took a pitchout
around right end for a 17-yard gain

to the Mission 46. The Eagle
defense stiffened, however, and
forced the Rattlers to punt.
On the first play of the ensuing
Mission possession, Flores threw a
deep pass down the left sideline that
Ronnie Cavazos caught in full
stride inside the Rio 35 and the
Eagle receiver galloped into the end
zone for a 73-yard scoring pass with
43 seconds remaining in the third
quarter. The successful conversion
by Kevin Long boosted Mission's
lead to 35-13.
On second and 10 from the
Rattler 36, Martinez caught a pass
across the middle at midfield and
raced toward the left sideline before
finally being brought down at the
Mission 37 for a 27-yard
completion. A short time later,
however, a pass on the right side
was intercepted at the Mission 35
and returned to the Rio 45.

Mission to punt, but a roughing

first down at the 31. Two plays
later, Flores threw a high arching
pass down the right sideline that
Greg Haring caught over his
shoulder for a 28-yard completion
to the Rio 3.
On the next play, Joe Segundo

three-yard scoring run with 8:05
remaining in the game. The
successful kick by Long gave the
Eagles a 42-13 advantage.
A 21-yard reception by Martinez
and a personal foul penalty against
the Eagles gave the Rattlers a first
down on the Mission 29. An Eagle
defender, however, intercepted a
pass at the 25 and returned the ball
to the Mission 47.
An Eagle punt forced the Rattlers
to set up shop on their 5. A short
time later, Perez ran a sweep to the
left and found no running room, but
reversed his field to the right, found
an opening in the middle of the
field, exploded into the secondary
and motored toward the left sideline
as he outran several Eagle defenders
for a spectacular 93-yard touchdown
run with 2:01 remaining in the
game.
Rodriguez then completed a pass
to Perez just across the goal line for
the two-point conversion that cut
Mission's lead to 42-21.
