STUDENTS, STUDY CLUB VISIT RETAMA MANOR—Members of Florence J.
Scott Study Club were joined in their annual Christmas visit to Retama Manor
Nursing Center by Rio Grande City High School Health Science Technology
Education students of Terry Muniz and one little helper elf, Nikki Villarreal. All
the residents enjoyed Christmas carols, as the guests spread Christmas cheer in each
hallway, the dining hall, and the lobby. Gifts were presented to be given to
residents at Christmas. A party at Pizza Hut followed the visit to Retama Manor.

awarded national honor
Senior Mario Alberto Gomez
was named the Rio Grande City
High School volunteer of the year
in The Prudential Spirit of
Community Awards program.
Sponsored by Prudential and
National Association of Secondary
School Principals, the awards
recognize outstanding self-initiated
community service.
Gomez is now eligible for the
Texas youth volunteer of the year
award. Two state honorees, one
middle-level and one high school
student, will each receive a $1,000
award, a silver medallion, and
travel to Washington D.C., for
recognition ceremonies where four
bronze medals to Distinguished
Finalists — two mid-level and two
high school — and several
certificates of merit will be
presented to honored students.
At the Washington event, 10
national volunteers of the year will
be named by a prestigious panel of
judges. They each will receive an
additional $5,000, a gold
medallion, and a crystal bowl
trophy for their schools.
"We .are excited to recognize
young people who make
contributions of their time and
talents to their communities," said
Prudential Vice President Bob
Fallon. "They are role models for
their peers and deserve to have the
spotlight focused on them."
Mario was involved in a
beautification project sponsored by
our local K.C. Council. As a
Chief Squire Mario led the squires
repainting graffiti on buildings.
"The school honoree practiced a
lesson we hope all students, as
well as adults, will emulate — that
volunteering within the
community is an essential part of
one's life," Said Dr. Timothy J.
Dyer, NASSP executive director.

involved in volunteer service.

Mario. I hope to see more students
getting involved i n some type of
community project".

Parade on Saturday, Dec. 14. Children from the Rio Grande City community together
with Mrs. Carmen Pena and other volunteers worked very hard to prepare "La Danza"
for the annual event "La Guadalupana" that was celebrated Dec. 12 at the Immaculate

is urging all students interested in
