Beta Sigma Phi to honor sweethearts Saturday
Five women will be announced
by their sororities as sweethearts by
Beta Sigma F'iii International at the
sweetheart dance on Saturday, Feb.
13.
Texas Laureate Zeta Theta's
sweetheart is Mrs. Diana A. Pena.
Diana is a 22-year member of
Beta Sigma Phi and has served as a
past president, vice president, and
recording secretary. She is presently
corresponding secretary. She has
been honored by her sorority as
pledge of the year and woman of the
year. She has also served as
chairperson for various committees.
Diana graduated as valedictorian
from Rio Grande City High
School. She received her bachelor's
degree from the University of
Houston and her master's degree
from the University of Texas-Pan
American. She also received her
mid-management and
superintendent's certification from
University of Texas-Pan American.
While enrolled at the University of
Houston, Diana was on the Dean's
list and active in student
government and several
organizations.
Diana spent 30 years as an
educator with the Rio Grande City
C1SD. She taught high school
students, served as a special
education counselor, as Director of
Planning, Guidance and Evaluation,
and the last five years as Assistant
Superintendent for Business and
Operations. On May 1, 1998, she
was appointed as Vice President for
Finance and Community Services
for South Texas Community
College and she began her duties on
July 1. In this capacity, she serves
students from both Starr and
Hidalgo Counties.
Diana was named as one of the
Outstanding Young Women of
America in 1980. She served as a
member of the Board of Employee
Benefits Group for the Texas
Association of School Boards. In
May 1998, she was appointed by
the State Bar of Texas to serve for a
three-year term as a grievance
committee member for District 12.
Diana is a past member of the
Texas Association of School
Administrators and the Association
of Texas Professional Educators.
She is presentJy a member of the
Community College Business
Officers Association.
Diana is the daughter of Mrs.
Petra C. Andrade and the late
Feliciana Andrade. She is married to
Diana A. Pena
three children - Dr. Deanna I. Pena,
28, an optometrist who practices in
Houston and recently married
Gilbert A. Garcia; Guadalupe, Jr.,
25, who attended Texas A&M
University-Kingsville, UT-Pan
American, and the Hidalgo County
Sheriff's Academy and is a deputy
with the Starr County Sheriff's
Department; and Ernesto Omar, 19,
a freshman at UT-Pan American.
Diana and her husband Guadalupe
are members of Immaculate
Conception Church.
Her hobbies include reading and
cooking. Diana enjoys being a
member of Beta Sigma Phi and is
looking forward to being a Silver
Circle recipient in a few years.
Teresa Frommer Muniz is
married to Leopoldo M. Muniz,
M.D. of Rio Grande City. They
have four children: Ashley, age 18,
a senior at Rio Grande City High
School; Michelle, age 12, a seventh
grader at St. Joseph's Academy in
Brownsville; Paul Miguel, age 4,
who attends First United Methodist
Preschool; and Brandon, age 3. She
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Paul R. Frommer of Aiken, South
Carolina.
Terry is a Cum Laude graduate of
Midwestern State University, where
she received a Bachelor of Science
degree in Nursing. While attending
the university, she was on the
Dean's List, University Honor
Roll, was named Outstanding
Nursing Student, was nominated for
the Clark Scholar Award (one of the
university's most prestigious
academic awards), and was
nominated Outstanding Senior
Woman.
She was elected vice president of

Teresa Frommer Muniz
Collegiate Senior Honor Society
and elected president of MSU
Student Nurse's Association for
two consecutive years. She served
on the MSU Nursing Department
Admissions and Review
Committee, the MSU Nursing
Department Research Committee,
the MSU Nursing Department
Curriculum Committee and was a
member of the Non-Traditional
Student's Association. She became
an Adjunct member of the faculty
of the university, and was inducted
into the National Nursing Honor
Society.
Before moving to Rio Grande
City, Terry was a Registered Nurse
in the Maternal-Child Department
of Wichita General Hospital in
Wichita Falls, Texas. She was an
R.N. Charge Nurse, and the R.N.
Preceptor for the R.S.N.-R.N.,
A.D.N-R.N., and L.V.N, students
in her department. She was also the
Prenatal Coordinator responsible for
all aspects of the hospital's prenatal
programs, including six different
programs taught to community
members in the hospital.
She also taught courses at
Midwestern State University,
Department of Continuing
Education. She was the instructor
for classes taught to In-Patients in
the Maternal-Child Department.
Terry was also a member of the
WGH Retention-Recruitment
Committee of the hospital in which
duties included attending University
Job Fairs for the purpose of
recruiting nursing students for
employment.
After completing the necessary
course work and 2500 practice
hours, Terry took the International
Examination and was awarded the
title Internationally Board Certified
Lactation Consultant. She was also
a Certified Professional Childbirth
Educator, Certified in Nenonatal
Advanced Life Support and Pediatric
Advanced Life Support
Terry was a member of the
Trinity Lutheran Church-Church
Council in various capacities for 14
years. She was an active member of
their women's organization, where
thorughout the years, she served as
president, vice president, secretary
and treasurer.
Terry was elected to the Texas-
Louisiana Synod Board of the
Women of the Evangeliical
Lutheran Church. It was at that
time that she was Editor and
Publisher of Tapestry, a newsletter
that was sent to all women of the
Synod. She was also on the Board
of Directors of the Trinity Lutheran
Church Day Care. She served as
Confirmation Instructor and
Vacation Bible School instructor.
Terry was a Campfire/Bluebird
Leader and a supporter of the
Wichita Falls Youth Soccer
Association. She served as

Estela Hernandez
homeroom mother for eight years at
the Episcopal School. Terry was a
volunteer at the Wichita Falls State
Hospital, and the American Red
Cross. She was a member of the
Fundraising/Membership
Committee of the Family
Y.M.C.A.
Terry was a member of the
Wichita Falls Bicycling Club. She
was on the Steering Committee and
was the Festival Director of the
Hotter n' Hell Hun ' - the
nation's largest sanct' n' "icycle
race. She was a successful
competitor in 30 mile, 50 mile,
100k and 100 mile bicycle races all
over Texas and Oklahoma. She also
competed in , placed and won
numerous Triathlons in Texas and
Oklahoma. Terry was a member of
the Southwest Texas Field and
Stream Association and the
American Trapshooting
Association. She was an active and
successful competitor in both Trap
and Skeet shooting across the
United States.
Terry married and moved to Rio
Grande City when her husband
joined the medical practice at the
Family Health Center. Since that
time, Terry was focused on building
a family - Paul Miguel was born in
May 1994, and Brandon followed
16 months later • building a home,
and building lasting friendships.
Terry implemented the Health
Science Technology Education
Program at Rio Grande City High
School. She was also a member of
the Texas Health Occupations
Association. Terry was a teacher at
Rio Grande City High School for
one year, and then became a
Clinical Instructor for the program
three days a week on a volunteer
basis.
She felt very honored to have
been nominated by her students to
Who's Who Among American
Teachers. Terry says that her
teaching experience at RGCHS was
one of the most rewarding
experiences in her life. She loved
very minute that she got to spend
with her students and is so proud of
their accomplishments. Almost
every one of her senior students has
gone on to college in pursuit of
their dreams.
Terry has served as a Youth Fair
Judge for two years and also as a
Youth Fair Parade Judge. She is a
member of the Florence J. Scott
Study Club where she has served on
the Report Committee, the
Scholarship Committee, and is
currently Corresponding Secretary.
She is a member of the Beta Eta
Tau Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi
where she has served on the
Telephone Committee, Sunshine
Committee, Yearbook Committee,
and Service Committee. She
worked with the Teddy Bear Project,
Thanksgiving Food Basket, and

Estella P. Garcia
Visit with Santa Project. She was
named "Girl of the Year" for her
chapter in 97-98, and as her chapter
Sweetheart for this year.
Estela Hernandez is Texas Xi
Alpha Gammar Rho's 1999
Sweetheart.
Estela is married to Patricio
Hernandez, and they have three
daughters: Cecilia Celeste, who is
attending college in Corpus Christi;
Lily Krystal and April Kristen, who
attend Ringgold Middle School.
Estela received her degree in
Elementary Education iwith an
endorsement in Bilingual Education
from Pan American University.
She also attended Our Lady of the
Lake University and the University
of Portland, Oregon where she
received training on implementing
the Montessori concept of educating
young children. While employed by
Texas Migrant Council, she
received continuous training by the
Southwest Educational Laboratory.
Presently, Mrs. Hernandez is
employed by the Rio Grande City
CISD as a teacher with the
responsibilities of a Parental
Involvement Specialist. Estela is
presently a member of the Stan-
County Library Board, the president
of the American Association of
University Women and a member
of Texas Xi Alpha Gammar Rho,
Beta Sigma Phi.
Estela's hobbies include crafts,
gardening and helping with the
Public Library.
Texas Beta Theta Iota's
Sweetheart is Mrs. Estella P.
Garcia
Estella is 28 years old and
married to Mr. Romeo Garcia of
Rio Grande City. Her husband of
eight years is an Agent with the
U.S. Boidcr Patrol in McAllen. She
has two children, Oscar Javier, age
8, a second grade student at Roque
Guerra, Jr. Elementary; and Daniel
Aaron, age 21 months.
Estella, her husband and their two
boys reside in Rio Grande City.
She is a 1989 graduate of South
San Antonio High School. She
attended Southwest Texas State
University and is currently
attending South Texas Community
College. She plans to finish her
studies, get her Business degree, and
go on to become a Certified Pubic
Accountant.
Estella was born and raised in
San Antonio and is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Jose H. Perez. She
has a twii brother, Esteban; a
sister, Adela; and two older
brothers, Jose and Ricardo.
Estella served as treasurer for Beta
Theta Iota from 1996 to 1998 and
is currently the president of Beta
Theta Iota. She dedicates herself to
her sorority, and to her sisters, in
order to meet and excel in the goals
set forth by Beta Theta Iota. She
strives to make her sorority the
most effective and productive in the
I community.
Her hard work and dedication have
not gone unnoticed by her sisters.

Adela Mancha
the Year, and in 1998 she was
selected as the Beta Theta Iota
Woman of the Year. She was
instrumental in initiating the Blue
Santa Program with the Rio Grande
City Police Department, and
together with her siste \ initiated
the Adopt-A-Highway Program
with the Texas Highway
Department
Estella is currently employed
full-time as a paraprofessional by
the RGCCISD and is assigned to
the Roque Guerra, Jr. Elementary
campus. Aside from being active in
her sorority, attending college, and
working full-time, Estella takes
pride in being active in the lives of
her two boys. She enjoys reading to
them and spends countless hours
playing games with them outdoors.
She is also the reporter for the
Roque Guerra, Jr. Elementary
Parent Teacher Organization and
dedicates herself to helping the
organization meet their goals.
Estella enjoys reading and
helping her mother-in-iaw with
assorted crafts. Estella, her
husband.and their two boys are
members of the Sacred Heart Los
Garcias Catholic Church in Rio
Grande City.
Estella enjoys being an active
charter member of Beta Theta Iota
and would like to thank her sorority
sisters for electing her as their
sweetheart this year. She would
also like to send a special "Thank
You" to her parents for believing in
her, her mother-in-law for all of her
help at home, and to her husband
for all of his devoted love and
support.
Mrs. Adela Mancha is being
honored as the 1999 Texas Beta
Theta Lambda sweetheart Adela is
married to Rolando Mancha of
Eagle Pass.Texas. She has three
children; Tanya, Flor Elena, and
Rolando Ruben.
Adela is a charter member of
Texas Beta Theta Lambda where she
has served as recording secretary for
two years. She was honored last
Founders Day as "Perfect
Attendance."
She is employed by Isthmus
Customhouse Brocr, where she has
worked for eight years. Adela
graduated from Eagle Pass High
School and attended Sul Ross State
University and Odessa Jr. College
Her hobbies include dancing,
listening to music, exercising, and
collecting anything with cows.
Adela plans to some day obtain a
Basin ess degree.
Adela would like to thank all her
