RISD receives federal grants
for technology improvements
Washington, DC - Today
Congressman Henry Cuellar,
together with Roma Independent
School District officials,
announced the awarding of two
grants totaling more than half a
million dollars.
The money will be used to
build the infrastructure needed
to place internet connections in
each classroom of Roma I.S.D.'s
two newest schools.
Specifically, the new Roel A.
and Celia R. Saenz Elementary
School and the new Ramiro
Barrera Middle School will each
have classrooms with at least
two internet-wired computers in
them, with future capabilities of
an additional three internet-
wired computers. Furthermore,
each school will host computers
labs throughout the campus,
with the middle school building
hosting an additional computer
lab in the library for research
purposes.
Congressman Cuellar says
this unprecedented award will
go a long way in providing
students at Roma l.S.D. with the
same state-of-the-art
opportunities given to other
students in larger cities.
"To succeed in today's world
of technological advantages,
students in our part of the state
all need to have equal
opportunities," said
Congressman Henry Cuellar. "1
applaud school district officials,
especially Leticia Cadena, for
their work in applying for this
available money and placing the
students of Roma l.S.D. first in
making sure they have all the
resources available to ensure
educational success."
The middle school, which
was granted $293,979.24, is
slated to open January, 2009,
and will be called Ramiro
Barrera Middle School after
long-time educator and once
high school principal of Roma
High School.
Meanwhile, the elementary
school, awarded $260,083.31,
will open its doors August,
2008, and will be named Roel
A. and Celia R. Saenz
Elementary School. Mr. Saenz
spent many years at Roma l.S.D.
as a math teacher and business
manager for the school district,
while Mrs. Saenz taught for
many years and served as a
librarian. She currently serves
on the Roma l.S.D. school
board.

ICS Student Council elects officers
Immaculate Conception School held elections recently. Students running for office went around the
classrooms encouraging others to vote for them by telling them what they would be doing for their and
the school's benefit. They also distributed some delicious candy. Finally, the big moment came. On
September 14, the students voted for the candidates they'd want to serve their school. On September
16, the results were given. These are as follows: President, Honorio Garza; Vice-President, Stevie
Garza; Secretary, Andrea Salazar; Treasurer, Alexis Bazan; and last but not least, Reporter, Karla
Barrera. So, these are the people that will be running all the events (or most of them) at the school.
Congratulations to everyone!

Dear Editor:
If you think drugs don't
affect the individual you are
wrong! Drugs destroy lives,
starting from the people who use
it to their families and
communities. The red ribbon
was adopted as a symbol of the
movement in honor of Agent
Camarena.
Here is the story behind such
event that is celebrated
nationwide. On Thursday,
February 7th, 1985, Enrique
"Kike" Camarena, 37, stashed
his badge and his service
revolver in his desk drawer and
headed for lunch with his wife,
Mika. Kiki, a U.S. Drug
Enforcement agent, had been on
the trail of Mexico's marijuana
and cocaine baron. He was due
to be re-assigned in three weeks,
after coming dangerously close
to unlocking a multi-billion
dollar drug pipeline which he
suspected extended in the
highest rank of the Mexican
army, police and government.
According to DEA's
reconstruction of events, five
men appeared at Kiki's side and
shoved him into a car. This was
the last time anyone saw Kiki
alive. Kiki Camarenas' body
was found I month later in a
shallow grave 70 miles form
Michoacan, Mexico. He had
been tortured, beaten and
brutally murdered.
Mika had to tell her three sons
that their daddy would not be
coming home again. As news of
the tragedy was hitting
newspapers, radio stations and
TV news broadcasts, member of
the National Federation of
Parents for Drug Free Youth
(now known as National Family
Partnership) were angered and
sickened by the killing and
destruction caused by alcohol
and other drugs.
The Red Ribbon became
their symbol to eliminate the
demand for drugs. The Red
Ribbon campaign became the
development to show the
intolerance for drugs in our
schools, work place, and
communities.
In 1988, the National
Federation of Parents for Dug
Free Youth coordinated the first
Red Ribbon Week, an eight-day
celebration proclaimed by
Congress. Each year since
1988, larger and greater support
of the cause and symbol of the
Red Ribbon Week Campaign
has impacted millions of
Americans like no other drug-
prevention campaign.
Red Ribbon Week is
• A time for gratitude for all thu ;
lives that remain drug-free
• A time to pledge to live a safe
and drug-free life.
• A time to remember those we
have lost in the fight against
drugs.
Join us in the combat against
drugs. Face it, DRUGS destroy
families! Don't wait until it
affects you personally. It is a
community effort.
