attack to edge Gladiators 14-10

I.AREDO - The Roma
Gladiators (0-3) have yet to
secure a victory this season but
are showing signs of
improvement. Roma knew
going into their third game of
non-district play that in order to
claim their first win against the
Martin Tigers, they were going
to have to stop their opponents'
double-wing offense. That
ljieant keeping the pigskin out of
their hands. But that challenge
proved to be quite a difficult one
by the end of the contest as the
I igers emerged with a tight 14-
► 10 victory.
The Tigers displayed their
ground assault mounting the
opening drive from their own
43-yard line after a 28-yard
kiekoff return and marching to
. in Gladiator 23-yard line using
ix plays in four minutes to do
so. On third and one, the Tiger
running back fumbled the ball
which was scooped up by junior
defensive end, Eduardo Barron
ind he rambled down field
untouched for a 77-yard
touchdown. Gladiator kicker
David Hinojosa added a
uccessful PAT and Roma had
the early lead in the game.
On the ensuing kiekoff, the
figers were again set up with
decent field position on their
own 41 after returning the
kiekoff 29 yards. Martin
mounted another time
. > 'sumina drive (11 plays in 7
..unites;, feeding the Gladiator
defense a steady diet of senior
'uniting back Ricky Murloz (25-
,9 yards) and senior Lorenzo
Delgado (8-89 yards, 2TD's).
Delgado scored the first of his
i 11) s v\ith 1:51 showing on
lie game clock and the PAT was
uccessful. Roma's offense ran
its first play from scrimmage
with less than two minutes
remaining in the first quarter. A
personal foul penalty stalled
Roma's initial drive resulting in
ri intercepted pass at the Martin
.'5-yard line with 11:52 in the
second quarter.
Again, the Tigers initiated
another clock-eating drive at
their own 40-yd. line and drove
to the Gladiator 6-yard line. On
fourth and goal the Gladiator
defense dug-in their heels and
stopped the Tigers from what
seemed like an inevitable score.
That great defensive stand gave
Roma renewed hope and the
offense responded. Mounting its
own drive at the Roma 5-yard
line, the Gladiators used 14
plays marching downfield to the
Tiger 4-yard line. With time
running out in the first half, the
Gladiators were flagged for a
delay of game penalty and opted
to give David Hinojosa a chance
to give Roma the lead at the
half. Hinojosa was true on a 26-
yard field goal with 1.1 seconds
left and the Gladiators led 10-7
as time expired.
The third quarter remained
scoreless but with time running
out Roma was forced to punt
from their own 18 and the
Tigers fielded the ball at the 50.
Four plays later, the Tigers
scored the go ahead touchdown
on a Delgado 41-yard TD run.
The PAT was successful and
Martin enjoyed a 14-10 lead
with 11:01 left in the fourth
quarter.
The Gladiator offense initiated
one more drive in the final
period driving to the Martin 9-
yard line. But again the drive
was stalled on penalties and
eventually an incomplete pass
on fourth and goal from the 13-
yard line with 6:43 remaining to
be played was too much of an
obstacle for the visiting team to
overcome. Roma's defense was
unable to stop the Tigers on
their next offensive possession
and Martin eventually ran the
clock out.
Two trips into the opponents
"red zone" and coming away
with only three points for your
effort certainly limits any teams'
possibility of attaining a victory.
Roma's offense needs to cash in
each time it ventures into this
area. The defense allowed
Martin to churn out 304 yards
rushing on 59 attempts. Not one
single pass play was attempted,
or needed, by the Tigers. The
Gladiators accumulated 8 first
downs to Martin's 17 and rushed
for 102 yards on 19 attempts.
Roma balanced that output with
83 yards through the air with 5
completions on 12 attempts and
one interception. The Gladiators
were also penalized 8 times for
50 yards.
Individually, Fernie Garza
rushed for 56 yards on 7
attempts; Edward Schiefelbein
9-42 and Saul Guerrero 1-5. In
the passing department,
Schiefelbein was 2-4-1 for 17
yards and Guerrero was 3-8-0
for 76 yards. Receiving, Fernie
Garza had 1 catch for 55 yards;
Ronnie Garza, 2-15; and Charlie
Garcia 2-13.
Roma opens up District 32-4A
competition this coming Friday
in a road trip to La Joya taking
on the Huskies (1-2) of Juarez-
Lincoln High School. The
Huskies are one of two new high
schools in the La Jcya school
district and even though most of
the veteran players remained
with the original Coyote football
program, the Huskies have
experience in some key
positions namely quarterback
and running back. La Joya's
offense has been putting up
some numbers and although
they lost their most recent game
to Class 4A Corpus Christi
Miller this past Friday, they
scored 28 points on the Bucs, all
in the second half. Roma's
defense will again have to key
on the potent running attack the
Huskies provide with Jose
Bocanegra (15-127 yds. and 2
TD's). While quarterback R. J.
Alaniz had only 3 completions
on 8 attempts that evening, he
has proven himself as an
adequate passer if need be.
