Slow, soaking light showers and
drizzle that fell throughout Starr
County for almost four days last
week proved beneficial to both
rangeland and crops, with close to
an inch of moisture falling in some
areas.
Light rain began falling
Wednesday morning, April 3 with
the arrival of a cold front that kepi
temperatures in the 60's for two
days. The drizzle and light showers
continued off and on through
Thursday before becoming fairly
constant throughout the day on
Friday,
The front dropped temperatures
from the 90's on Tuesday, April 2
into the 60's on Wednesday. The

mercury did not ease back into the
70's until Friday, and normal
springtime warmth began to return
on Saturday as the temperature
climbed into the 80's.
The Rio Grande City Fire
Department recorded 1.94 inches of
rain over a four-day period. A total
of 1.01 inch fell in the 24 hours
ending at 7 a.m. Friday. The other
daily totals were as follows:
THURSDAY, APRIL 4- .11 inch;
SATURDAY. APRIL 6- .80 inch;
SUNDAY, APRIL 7- .02 inch.
Bob Alderman of Rio Grande
City indicated that .60 inch fell at
his residence from Wednesday to'
Saturday.
NRCS District Conservationist
Arturo Ibarra indicated. "Much of
the county received roughly one-
half inch. Much of the Rio Grande
City area got close to one inch. La
Gloria got one-half to three-quarters
of an inch, and the La Grulla and
Garciasville areas received one-half
to three-quarters of an inch."
Ibarra added. "The Roma area got
from .20 to .50 of an inch. El Sauz
got about one-half inch in many
areas...Delnnta got .20 inch to 50
inch...The rainfall amounts were
generally less in western areas of
the county."
"Any rain right now helps,"
emphasized Ibarra. "It was a very
slow soaking rain with very little
runoff. The pastures got some
needed moisture. It was also very
helpful to cropland."
Ibarra concluded, "Much more
rain is definitely needed. We're still
in a very critical situation. We're in
worse shape than this time last
year. We had no rains at all during
the winter. The heavy freeze we had
late in the winter also was harmful
to pastures."
The cold front also brought
considerably cooler weather,
dropping temperatures from the
90's into the 60's over a one-day
period. The cool weather was found
by some to be invigorating.
The Fire Department recorded the
following low and high
temperatures: WEDNESDAY,
APRIL 3- low 63, high 73;
THURSDAY. APRIL 4- low 57,
high 63; FRIDAY, APRIL 5- low
60, high 68; SATURDAY, APRIL
6- low 60, high 83.
