ended on first down,
however, when a pass by
quarterback Angel Alaffa was
intercepted in the Donna end

Early in the final period,

Mission Eagles soar past
struggling Gladiators 55-0
By Ricky Perez
Roma - The Mission
Eagles (7-1, 5-0) scored on
their first offensive
possession of the ball game
before the Gladiator defense
adjusted sufficiently to slow
them down, but the visitors
caught fire later to emerge
with a 55-0 victory.
Roma (4-4, 1-4) even had
success early running the
ball against the vaunted
Eagle defense but could not
manage to finish each drive
for a score. But two late
scores in the second quarter,
touchdown receptions by
Luis Zamora at the 2:35
mark and another by Mike
Reynoso with time expired,
would be all the Eagles
needed to wake up from
their offensive slumber as
they took a 21-0 lead into
the intermission. After that,
it was all Mission Eagles as
the Gladiators never did
recover from the late second
quarter scores.
The Eagle defense shut
down the Gladiators in the
second half and Mission's
offense got its rhythm back
under the leadership of their
able quarterback, Gilbert
Gonzalez. Turnovers by the
Gladiators on offense also
helped the Eagles pad their
lead on more than one
occasion. Mission
accumulated 19 first downs
to the Gladiators 13. Roma
rushed the ball 33 times for
101 yards and added 130
yards via the passing game
but defensively allowed 372
yards and committed 4
costly turnovers. Roma
junior running back, Nestor
Garcia led all Roma runners
with 67 yards on 13 carries
Roma quarterbacks, senior
Saul Guerrero completed 4
passes in 14 attempts and
was intercepted twice while
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor:
Through the years I have
become more aware of three
(3) things that I learned as a
young man, and which are
still very much engrained in
my memory to this day.
These are: my Social
Security number, my
military serial number, and
my High School Alma
Mater.
I was ten (10) years old
when I was told by an
employer to apply for a
Social Security number, and
eighteen (18) when Uncle
Sam accepted me in the U.S.
Army Reserves and later in
the U.S. Air Force. 'Ihe
same military number
applied for both services.
The High School Alma
Mater, as today, was required
learning when you came into
the ninth grade, but for
many, as it did then, it
becomes routine. We hold
hands and we jump and shout
as part of the pre-game
activity, but on Friday
October 16, 2009, the true
meaning and power of those
words became alive in the
hearts of our "Fighting
Rattlers" when they
continued "ONWARD AND
NEVER WAVERED,
TRIED THO' FOR A
WHILE, TILL AT LAST
THEY PLANTED THE
STANDARD" defeating the
Palmview Lobos in perhaps
the greatest game of the
season. In my opinion, that
was the "game of the week."
Congratulations Coach
Lozano, Coach Gonzalez,
and the rest of the coaching
staff, but most of all to that
Rattler team that has been
knocking at the door of each
game, bending some but
NEVER breaking and
NEVER quitting. Those are
lessons that we learn and
they stay with us throughout
our lives. "May you always
live in Glory, win in all you
do".
Enrique Gonzalez
Rio Grande City
Rattler: 1952-1956
junior OB Exlquio Gonzalez
was 5-13 with 2
interceptions. Senior wide
receiver Oscar Pompa led all
Gladiator receivers with 6
receptions for 59 yard'.
The Gladiators are on the
road this week for a
Thursday night game at Tom
Landry Stadium in Mission,
Texas versus the Patriots
from Mission Veterans
Memorial High School. The
Patriots (5-3, 3-2) were 12-0
winners over the struggling
Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets
last Friday night. The
Patriots struggled against the
Yeilowjacket defense and
are beatable in my opinion.
But the Gladiators are going
to have to show up for this
game. I mean the same
Gladiator football team that
started off the season
shutting down two 5A
Laredo teams and a playoff
bound 3A Zapata Hawk
team. If that Gladiator
football team shows up
Thursday night at Tom
Landry Stadium, the Patriots
will suffer their fourth loss
of the season. The seniors
on the team need to show the
necessary leadership to
guide the underclassmen on
this next quest. It's time to
step it up.
With two games remaining
on the schedule, finishing
the season with two victories
is possible. But each game
is 48 minutes in length and
must be played with the
intensity needed to win until
the last second ticks off the
clock. See you at Tom
Landry Stadium in Mission,
TX next Thursday night at
7:00 p.m.! Be there, or be
square!

ping sauce can make a delightful
and nutritious treat
