Sanchez Elementary observes NCBA Month
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. NBCA educates everyone about the
importance of early detection. As a result, breast cancer deaths are now on the decline.
General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary Counselors encouraged all students and staff to show
their support by providing everyone with a pink ribbon to be worn throughout the month.
Wednesday. October 7. 2009, was designated as "Pink Day." Pictured above are several

STC instructor pursues nursing degree
to become better teacher, mentor
Educators are always
looking for new ways to
facilitate student learning.
And sometimes, all it takes
is a little empathy. That's
exactly what led South
Texas College Instructor
Luci Nell Simpson to pursue
her latest endeavor
becoming a nurse.
Simpson, who teaches
Anatomy and Physiology at
STC's Starr County Campus
in Rio Grande City, Texas
decided to trade places w ith
her students and enrolled in
the college's Associate
Degree in Nursing Program
to enhance her teaching
ability.
Finding new ways to better
connect with students is
important, and professional
development activities such
as these allow instructors to
adjust their teaching
strategies to meet their
students' needs, says
Simpson. And because the
majority of the students
enrolled in her courses are
allied-health majors, she
wanted to make sure the
concepts she was teaching
would benefit them in the
future.
"Pursuing a degree in
nursing allows me to
improve my current
instruction because I feel I
can lead by example as other
instructors are doing for
me," she said. "I want to
know exactly what I am
preparing my students for
and I think being in another
instructor's classroom helps
me see through my student's
eyes and relate to them on a
different level. The whole
experience is improving my
own teaching style because I
can provide my students
with information pertaining
directly to their future
The first challenge in her
quest was getting into the
program, which helped shed
light on why students stress
over the challenge of the
admission process. All of
STC's nursing and allied
health programs are
selective, and those who
apply must go through a
rigorous application process
to insure they meet the
standards of each respective
area of study.
"Getting into the program
was not easy for me, as I had
to go through the same
rigors as everyone else," she
said. "But I did ultimately
prevail, and it was a very
proud moment when I heard
the news that I was admitted.
Going through the process
helped me understand what
my students go through to
get into allied health
programs. It was a real eye-
opener to see things from
this perspective. It also
reaffirmed my decision to go
back to school to provide my
students with the skills
necessary to make their
career goals a reality."
So far, Simpson has added
a broad overview of human
anatomy and physiology to
her lessons, as well as a
review of the fundamental
terms, concepts and
principles of allied health as
they relate to job knowledge
in the medical industry. STC
student Joe Sepulveda Jr.,
who is pursuing a degree in
nursing, says that being in
Simpson's class is providing
him with the tools he needs
to navigate his upper
division level healthcare
courses.
"Taking any type of class
in the healthcare field can be
quite challenging because
what we learn prepares us to
deal with real-life situations
we will face out in the field,"
said Sepulveda. "I really
appreciate the fact that Ms.
Simpson is taking this type
of empathic approach to
teaching. Being in her class
gives me the foundational
knowledge I' need to better
succeed in the program, and
in my future career."
And even though it is often
difficult for her to be a full-
time student and full-time
faculty member, Simpson
says the reward of
facilitating her students'
success makes the hard work
worth it in the end.
"It gets tough juggling it
all, but I know my nursing
degree will open up many
doors of opportunity for me
and my students, including
helping to expand on the
current licensed vocational
nursing program at our Starr
County Campus." she said.
"Ultimately, I hope all of my
efforts will allow me to be of
greater benefit to the
members of my
community."

PUBLIC NOTICE
Notice is hereby given that the Rio Grande Regional Water Planning Group
(RGRWPG). known as Region M in the state's regional water planning
system, is seeking input on proposed revisions to the region's population and
water demand projections. At least 23 cities in the RGRWPG have shown
faster than anticipated growth that has the potential to impact the planning
group's water demand projections and the accuracy of the planning group's
water management strategies.
Surveys were sent to the 23 cities to ascertain which population projections
they prefer the planning group to use - those from the 2007 State Water Plan,
those from the Slate Data Center, or their own independently-obtained data.
After obtaining public comments, the RGRWPG will discuss the survey
results and make decisions regarding which population projections will be
used for the cities that did and did not respond to the surveys.
Written and oral comments regarding the population projections will be
taken at a Public Meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2009
at the l.RGVDC Transportation Center located at 510 S. Pleasantview Dr.,
Weslaco, IX. Additional written comments must be received by the
