Junior explores papal works
Theology of body dinner and discourse
by Meghan Kuckelman
Contributing Writer
Speaking to a room filled
beyond capacity, junior Nathan
Castellanos spoke last Tuesday
on what author George Weigel
refers to as a "theological time
bomb set to off in the third mil-
lennium": the theology of the
body.
Castellanos began his speech
with a story Because of a few too
many tickets, he was not allowed
to drive this summer and was
thus transported everywhere by
a friend, Melissa.
As they were spending a good
deal of time with each other, Cas-
tellanos began to wonder about
the nature of their relationship.
"I began to get a little bit con-
cerned,"he said. After reading the
book I Kissed Dating Goodbye in
high school, Castellanos had set
up rules for himself with regard
to relationships with members of
the female gender, basing them
upon the notion that two people
of the opposite sex could not be
alone for a significant period of
time without sinning. He had be-
gun wondering ifsingle men and
women could be "just friends."
This summer, he discovered
that his rules were failing short.
In an attempt to sort out his
concerns and gain some under-
standing of the relationships be-

tween men and women, Castel-
lanos began reading the writings
of Pope John Paul II. Healsotook
up Weigei's A Witness to Hope
and writings by Christopher West
on the theology of the body.
A major part of his reading
was the 129 Wednesday audi-
ence addresses that the pope
gave in the first five years of his
pontificate. These consisted of
reflections on human sexuality.
The problem, Castellanos
said, is that sexuality has been
twisted by today's society into
something far from its original
and spiritual meaning.
"The greatest evil of the 20th
century is an attack on our sexu-
ality," he said.
According to the pope, the
most fundamental question
humans can ask themselves is
"What does it mean to be a man
or woman?"
The answer comes, Castel-
lanos said, in a closer look at the
creation of man and the resulting
fall in the first book of the Bible.
Man was the only creature, he
said, that was created solely for
its own good, and man can only
find himself in a sincere gift of
himself. Since man was created
in God's image, and God is love,
man can only find himself in a
pure gift of love. Thus, God cre-
ated woman.
According to Gen. 2:25, man
and woman were both naked,
"yet they felt no shame."
Shame, Castellanos said, re-
sults from a "fear of not being
respected for our true dignity."
This is contrary to the true mean-
ing of sexual desire.
"In the beginning, God gave
us our sexuality to be the very
power to love as he loves," he
said. "It is in and through our
bodies that we make love pres-
ent in the world."
This teaching insists upon
respect for the bodies, as only
something holy and good could
be the vessel through which
God's love is brought into the
world.

Leadership training
continued from pg. 1
venture into the community and
work on a project that affects a
larger radius.
"The program was designed
to be experiential and hands-on
for the students," Borski said,
"They're building life-skills."
Student response to the pro-
gram has been positive. The
trainers attribute the excitement
expressed by the scholarship
recipients to the fact that the stu-
dents have the innate leadership
skills the program will tap into.
"If it is beneficial to me in the
long run, then I'm more than
willing to donate one hour a
month of my time," Dan Lively,
freshman, said.
The 61 students who received
the scholarship have had two
meetings discussing the pro-
gram and beginning their train-
ing.
"The students seem really
excited about the whole thing
several of them have even ap-
proached me with ideas for the
service project," Bro. Charles
said.
Long-term goals of the three
trainers include opening up
some of the training to students
in other leadership positions but
who do not have the presidential
scholarship.
