Women s soccer team positive at halfway mark
by Matt McGee
Contributing Writer
The Crusaders suffered their third loss
of the season Tuesday at home, losing to
Hardin-Simmons, 3-1. The defeat brings
their season record to 5-3.
Despite an early lead, it was Hardin-Sim-
mons that scored three unanswered goals to
end any possible Dallas comeback.
UD began the match with great energy
and aggressiveness,, resulting in the first
goal of the game by Tiffany Barden in the
13th minute of play. Hardin-Simmons
fought back quickly and countered with two
goals in the first period and would then add
another late in the second.
The first half of the Crusaders' season
was marked by a tough schedule that forced
the ladies to step up their level of play. The
Hardin-Simmons game, however, has left
the ladies looking for answers to the future
of a season that has been defined by key
victories and tough losses.
"This game will probably be a turning
point in the season; it will either make or
break us," head coach Stefani Papageorge
Webb said. "We will either gain confidence
in an effort to be able to finish games and
really put teams away, or we will fall
down."
Webb added that in the practices fol-
lowing the games, she has already noticed
a different training mentality. The team
seems to be working hard to gain back any
lost confidence in their ability to finish off
games.
Hardin-Simmons outshot I'D 29-11
while I 1) goalkeeper Shanna Nelson
turned in a solid performance with 14 saves
despite giving up three goals.
"It seemed that we were pushed out of
our game after that first goal," freshman
Katie Pryor said. "We got a little over ex-
cited because of who we were playing."
After their first goal, instead of using
their momentum, the Crusaders seemed to
lose some intensity.
"We weren't aggressive enough after
the one goal lead," Pryor said. "We were
trying not to lose rather than pushing to
continue to win."
The Crusaders will try to bounce back
and regain big-game confidence when they
host the University of the Ozarks Sunday,
Sept. 30th (see box for results). UD then
travels for five straight road games during
October.
UD 3, Univ. of Ozarks 1
The UD women's soccer team beat
the University of the Ozarks Sunday,
running its record to 6-3-0.
The Crusaders got goals from
sophomore Veronica Chadwick and
seniors Leslie Smith and Meg Hamlet
in the victory.
Tara Mahoney, Maria Bellon, Jenny
Walsh and Smith added assists.
Goalkeeper Shanna Nelson re-
corded two saves and allowed just one
goal, coming on a penalty kick.
UD outshout the Ozarks 36-4
After Chadwick scored 17 minutes
into the game, the Eagles tied it up just
before the half. Hamlet's game-winner
came with 18 minutes remaining.

Crusaders lose to Ozarks2-0,
winning streak stopped at four
by Jack Price
Sports Editor
The UD men's soccer team
lost at home Sunday, 2-0, to the
University of the Ozarks.
The loss drops UD's 2001 mark
to 5-3-0. The Crusaders have
already eclipsed last season's
win total.
The defeat to the Ozarks (9-0-1
on the season) snapped UD's four-
match wming streak
The Crusaders managed just
seven shots as they were domi-
nated by an Ozarks barrage that
included 42 shots.
UD goalkeepers Ryan Reedy
and Cody Worden combined for
18 saves, each allowing a goal in
a full half of play.
UD fell behind as the Ozarks
scored 28 minutes into the game.
It remained a one goal contest
until late in the second half, when
the Eagles scored an insurance
goal, playing the rebound off of a
Worden save.
"We never had possession in
the game." senor Jimmy Wheaton
said. "You can't win a game if
you don't put any shots up."
Senior Garrett Fox agreed that
the offensive effort was lacking.
"I feel like we lost the game
because we played too much de-
fense," he said
Friday, UD defeated Wiley
College, 4-2, in Marshall.
UD took the lead 23 minutes
in as Mason Mauldin scored un-
assisted.
After Wiley evened the match
at one before halftime, the Cru-
saders' Tim Beebe scored on an
assist by Kyle Francis.
Francis then scored a goal of
his own, assisted by Mauldin, to
give UD a 3-1 edge.
Francis returned the favor 11
minutes later, setting up Mauldin
for his second score of the day just
before Wiley added a late goal to
make the score 4-2.
UD won its third straight home
match last Tuesday, defeating Le-
Tourneau University, 6-2.
Mauldin and Francis once
provided the offensive
spark for UD, scoring two goals
each. Francis also added a pair
of assists.
Wheaton had a goal and two
assists, and David Barber also
scored for the Crusaders.
Reedy played the entire game
for UD, stopping seven shots.
UD started the game by scoring
unanswered four times in the first
half before LeTourneau netted its
two scores.
UD capped the effort with two
insurance goals a minute apart
within the final six minutes of
the contest.
The Crusaders rest for a week,
playing next in Marshall at East
Texas Baptist University at 4 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Through Sept. 16, Francis was
ranked 14th nationally among
Division III socrers, averaging
3.33 points per game. With his big
week, he should remain among
the leaders.

Senior defender Garrett Fox advances the ball for the Crusaders in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the University of the
Ozarks. UD's five wins this season already give it a better record than it had in last year's campaign.
