tlnent. By these roads El Paso was placed about equally distant be-
tween San .Francisco, bt. Louis, New Orleans and ^Mexico City.
• Three other roads, more local in character, have since been
added: The Pecos Valley & Northeastern, reaching the city over the
Texas & Pacitic, and giving access to the second largest valley in
New Mexico; the El Paso & Northeastern, opening the, city to the
heart of central New Mexico; and the Rio Grande, Sierra. Madre &
Pacific, making tributary to ItSCPaso tne best parts of northwestern
Mexico. These eight roads, considering the scope/and extent of
.'country" they command, make El Paso the greatest railroad center oi
the entire country. But more of these roads hereafte
EL PASO'S GROWTH.
The growth of El Paso is that with which we have especially to
do^at this particular place, and that growui can be shown by increase
alike in population and m assessed valuation of taxable property. It
may be r emembered thjit in 1878 the population of the town is stated
to have been about 200. By the census of la70 the population of the
county is put down at 3G71. Ten years afterward, or in 1880, the
countylpopulation had increased to 3864, or a gain of 175.. If the en-
tire increase be credited- to tne town, the population of the latter in
1880 could not have exceeded 375 or 400. At the next census, 1890,
the population of the country had become 16,728, of whi^h 11,000
were set down to the city—a gain in ten years of 10,600 or more than
J000 for each year of the decade, the total gain for the time being
265 per cent - • ? - -
It is true that the government census for 1900 gave the city
but 16,000 residents, or about 5000 more than was given by the census
of 1S90. But the absurdity) of this count is manifest to every one
who visits El Paso, and is. supremely ludicrous to those who have
resided here during the last decade. The directory enumeration and
the -school census equally show how imperfectly wag taken the na-
tional census, while the experience of several thousand confirms" the
statement that iri the most thickly populated parts of the town many
blocks were never visited.'by the enumerators. The population of El
Paso did without doubt more than double during the last decade, and,
unless all indications-prove false, it may safely be asserted that the
increase during 1900-1901 has been the most remarkable known in the
history of the place. Conservative estimate cannot be far'wrong in
putting El Paso's present population at fully 30,000.
INCREASE IN PROPERTY VALUES. / '
L But the growth of the city is shown with equal satisfaction
b>-the increase in property values. In 1877 El Paso,, property was
'assessed but $418,200. In five years it grew to $1,047,420.- By 1894,
or during twelve years, it increased to '$5,052,606. For March, 1898,
city property was listed at $5,283,925. It may be stated /that since
1894 the tendency has been-to lower assessed values and increase
