WEST TEXAS STATE COLLEGE-CHANGE OF NAME
CHAPTER 40
H. B. No. 12
An Act relating to a change In the name of West Texas State College at Canyon,
Texas; amending Section 1 of Chapter 223, Acts of the Fifty-first Legisla-
ture, 1949, so as to change the name of West Texas State College to "West
Texas State University"; ratifying and confirming In behalf of "West
Texas State University" all legislative Acts and appropriations heretofore
passed in behalf of West Texas State College, West Texas State Teachers
College, or West Texas State University; and declaring an emergency.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Texas:
Section 1. That Section 1 of Chapter 223, Acts of the Fifty-first Leg-
islature, 1949, is amended 39 to read as follows:
"Section 1. The name of the coeducational institution of higher learn-
ing at Canyon, Texas, now known as West Texas State College, shall here-
after be known as 'West Texas State University'; and said West Texas
State University as newly named shall remain under the jurisdiction of
the Board of Regents, Texas State Teachers Colleges."
Sec. 2. Wherever the name West Texas State College, or West Texas
State Teachers College, or any reference to either, appear in any Acts
of any Legislature of this State, such name and such reference shall
hereafter mean and apply to West Texas State University, in order to
conform to the new name of said University as provided in Section 1
hereof.
Sec. 3. All legislative Acts and appropriations heretofore passed ei-
ther in or by reference to West Texas State College or to West Texas State
Teachers College or to West Texas State University are in all things rati-
fied and confirmed in behalf of West Texas State University.
Sec. 4. The fact that the present name West Texas State College does
not designate properly the purposes for which said institution was found-
ed and the further fact that the change in name to "West Texas State
University" provided in this Act will necessitate the issuance of new
catalogs and other publications prior to the next school year create an
emergency and an imperative public necessity that the Constitutional
Rule requiring bills to be read on three several days in each House be
suspended, and this Rule is hereby suspended, and that this Act take ef-
fect and be in force from and after its passage, and it is so enacted.
Passed the House, February 14, 1963, by a non-record vote; passed the
Senate, March 28, 1963, by a viva-voce vote.
Approved April 4, 1963.
Effective 90 days after date of adjournment.
