Richard Washburne Davis was the oldest of
three children born to the union of William S.
Davis and Eula Visor Davis.
Richard graduated from Brackenridge
Elementary School, Douglas Junior High School,
and Phyllis Wheatley High School. He attended
Prairie View College for two years.
In 1940, Richard went to Washington, D.C. to
work for Civil Service. At this time he attended
Howard University. He was drafted into the
Army on February 18, 1942. He was sent to
Officers Candidate School in England in the fall
of 1942. He was among the first Negro men to
have completed the course in England. These
fourteen - the picture of the fourteen men in this
group appears in the book, "The Negro in World
War II by John D. Silvera.
Richard was in five major battles from North
Africa, Italy and France. He was discharged
from the Army in the fall of 1945. He returned at
this time to civil service work in Washington,
D.C.
Richard suffered a heart attack on November
4, 1988 and was in intensive care at Brooke
General Hospital for a week. He was transferred
to Audie Murphy Veteran's Hospital. He
suffered a fatal heart attack and died at 8:30
p.m. on November 22.1988.
Richard leaves to mourn him, his loving and
devoted mother, Eula M. Davis; two sisters,
Helen E. Younger of San Antonio, Texas and
Flores J. Webb of Chicago, Illinois; niece, Fiores
W. Bishop of San Diego, California; nephew,
Louis C. Webb, Jr. of Hartford, Connecticut;
grandniece, Zahra Bishop of San Diego,
California; first cousins, Burghardt Edwards,
Sr. of San Antonio, Texas, Velma Diaz--Infante
of Los Angeles. California; Rachal May of
Orange, Virginia and other cousins and friends.
