Colloid Equipment
For Milligan and
Weiser Installed
New apparatus for determining the
structure of films and finely divided ma-
terials is being installed in the colloid
research laboratories to aid fir. Harry
Ti, Weiser and Dr. \V, C). Milligan in
colloid chemistry researches.
The new electron diffraction equip-
ment wilf make possible a more minute,
study of surface structure, such as lilms
on metals, fir. Milligan stated, aiid a
closer examination of crystal lit cs too
small#fo give a definite X-ray .diffraction
pattern
Accessories will convert the X-ray dif-
fraction apparatus formerly used into
'an,electron diffraction unit,making pos-
sible the taking of clear photographs of
particles too small for X-rav photon
rapby. An electric unit capable of pro-
ducing a constant electromotive ■force of
70.000 volts is also being installed.
Using .the X-ray equipment already
availaUe, Doctor Weiser and Doctor
Milligan were the first scientists; to ob-
tain a direct photograph of colloidal .so-:
lutioits, The X-ray ||jj| sent directly
through an tmihclosed: column of cfi|
lodial solution dropping through the
camera registered a clear diffraction pat-
tern of the solution.
The results of these investigations will
■be..published in the November issue of
the Journal of Physical Chemistry.
These results have alread.v: been pre-
sented to the Colloid Symposium iti St:
l.onis last June. ~
