favorite shirt fabric with college
men . . . and all men who like
casual college styles.
And of all oxford cloth shirts—
Arrpw Gordon is the nation's
choice. Small wonder! Gordon has
the sleekest collar ever seWn on

Closs To Be Trained
For Spot Vacated
By Craddock
Last season Buster Bran noil's bas-
ketball players promised him the con-
ference title, and they delivered it in
Gregory Gymnasium at the expense
of Texas University. Tonight they
begin their long and arduous task
of defending that title, just six weeks
before embarking upon the most am-
bitious schedule in Institute history.
Brannon, the boy coach who hit
the Southwest jackpot in two short
years, tests his men here against
Louisiuna State and Southern Cali-
fornia before leaving upon a ten-day
invasion of the East. Conference play
begins in Austin the night of Jan-
uary 7.
Closs Will Start
On paper it appears that Bill Tom
Closs, giant 6-feet, flW-inch sopho- i
more from Hearne, Texas, will be |
moved up from the freshman squad j
to fill the spot vacated by Levi Crad-
dock. Closs teams with Frank Cars-
well, who makes a final bid for an i
All-American birth after having been j
hampered last season by a sprained
ankle.
At center, the Owls challenge the j
I conference with Bob Kinney, All-
; "Conference sophomore who averaged
over 12 points per night last winter
over a 27-game stretch. Kinney has
'added fifteen pounds and an inch to
his -towering frame. He checked in'
Wednesday at 211 pounds, 6 feet, 0 ->4 !
inches.
Palmer At Utility
Captain Plaeido Gomez and Bounc- i
ing Bertie Selman resume their nomi-
nal starting positions at guard, al-
though Brannon uses what approxi-
mates five forwards on the attack
and five guards on the defense. Chet|
j Palmer remains as number one utility :
man. Fred Pepper and Whitlock Zan-J
jder are the other two Returning let-
j termen. Pepper is being trained as
an understudy to Closs, who will be
moved over to center in the absence
of Kinney. Zander and sophomore
Ray Ziiqmerman. are excused from
practice, until after the close of the
football season.
A returning squadman is Stancil
Norton, who got his baptism under
Andrew Mellon's $750,000 mansion
and seven acres of land have been
given to Pennsylvania College for
Women, whose nine-acre campus ad-
joins the Mellon estate in Pittsburgh's
fashionable East end.

upsets recorded—Rice over Texas,
Tulsa over Texas Christian, Arkan-
sas over Olo Miss—cut even the av-
erages of the professionals to the
bone. At Texas University a column-
ist not only recorded a worse average,
but admitted that Notre Dame "might
give the Longhorns a real tussle"
after launching into a bitter attack
upon Williamson, scientific dopester
who had the Texas machine in at
nineteenth in national rating.
THIS WEEK
The conference this week looks like:
Southern Methodist 14, Texas 6—
The Steers are on the rebound, and
the Ponies are dogged with injuries
to key men, but Presto Johnson is
the equal of Crain any day in the
week in all-round play. Definite
Pony superiority in the line, should
tell the tale. Layden ia destined to
give continual trouble with his im-
proving aerial thrusts, but SMU
gets the call on cold facts.

— In the oncoming Mountaineers,
the red machine so rudely jarred
by Baylor meets a fearful teat.
Klmbrough and his mates get a
slight nod on the strength on Jar-
ring John, a better forward wall
and playing on Kyle Field. Frei-
berger is ready to challenge the
Aggie defense on passes for a full
sixty minutes, however, and any
conference chase, Buster Brannon
begins to do a double, stint for the
next six weeks. The boy coach puts
in his afternoons on the gridiron,
and returns at night for a two-hour
session with the defending cham-
pions on the basketball court. Bill
Tom Closs, Hearne sophomore,
could shoot Brannon's outfit Into
the national championship picture
if he comes through as a replace-
ment for Craddock.

Next Monday and Tuesday repre-
sentatives of the Thresher Will meet
you in sallyport, the Engineering
Building, and other places around the
campus. When they hand you a
mimeographed sheet, it is not a sum-
mons, so step bravely and take it;
fill it out; and bund it hack. You'll
be helping your school build up good
will with Houston business men; and,
also, helping your paper to GROW.
The object is to determine the pur-
chasing power of the whole student
body, the amount it will probably
spend in Houston stores next year,
and the articles it will buy. A sci-
entific estimate of this sum, the pur-
pose of this painless quiz, Will let the
merchants discover the large amount
1 of business Rice students bring them.
S It may also give you a rough idea of
your expenditures for thlt coining
year.
The lists will consist of several
: large divisions (such as clothing, lux-
uries, etc.) sub-divided into specific
articles, brands, and so forth. The
I questionnaire is, in fact, su„ painless
