Jingle Ball
Wednesday night, December 18, the annual Jingle Ball will
be held at Autry House. The Canterbury Club aponaors the
dance each year on some date just before the Christmas holi-
days. This year the Choral Club will .entertain with some selec-
tions of its own and also lead in group singing.
The admission for the dance is some gift or toy wljtch will
be given to some needy child. It is difficult to express the im-
portance of the purpose of this dance in the light of the im-
measurable happiness gained by those needy children in receiv-
ing the gifts, small as they maybe, at Christmas time. It is the
only opportunity that we, the students of Rice Institute, have,
as a body, to do anything to help make Christmas day a happy
one I'or those unfortunate children. This will be the happiest
Christmas in several years for us, so let's do our part to make it
happy for them.

DR. HOUSTON—
(Continued from page 1)
the development of radar, the work
on anti-submarine devices and the
great development of mechanical
devices, Dr. Houston praised the
work of the National Defense Re-
search Committee which was es-
tablished in 1040 under the leader-
ship of Dr. Vannevar Bush. Dr.
Houston said that the great sci-
entific progress made under the
guidance of this group was made
possible by bringing together, in
highly effective cooperation, many
leading scientists.
Deploring the attempts to con-
ceal, by measures of secrecy, the
scientific work that is being done
for military purposes, Dr. Houston
said that he believed it was impos-
sible to maintain any such effec-
tive safeguards because of the
sameness of scientific research all
over the world. He said that he
fully subscribed to the present
United States position on interna-
conflict. Sepaking of atomic energy,
Speaking of the United States gov-
1 ernment proposals for international
supervision of atomic energy, Dr.
Houston said: "The proposal con-
templates complete freedom of re-
search and publication, but with the
necessary accompaniment of ade-
I quate supervision, throughout the
I world, of all activities that might
I be a threat to peace."
Dr. Houston t h e n enumerated
many of the contributions that'sci-
ence had made to modern living by
the scientist. But, he said: "In spite
of the Way in which scientific re-
search and engineering develop-
ment have influenced our way of
life; and in spite of the magnitude
of the part that science and engi-
neering play in warfare, I am in-
clined to believe that the most im-
portant influence of science on civ-
ilization is its effect on the atti-
tude of mind of the people of the
world. Science affects the philoso-
phy of life of all those associated
with it."
In concluding this final lecture,
Dr. Houston stated: "Science and
technology are acclaimed on all
sides as determining our future.
There are those who look to this
future with fear and apprehension.
They fear that our knowledge is
too wide, our power too great, for
our moral development. They are
afraid of the littleness of man, in
the face of his own accomplish-
ments.
"But we can look forward with
hope and confidence. The problems
are great, but man has with the
divine spark He can press on to
their solution.
"There is no turning back; we
can only go forward. We need not
fear science. We can command it.
In no light does man appear more
competent, more nearly approach-
ing the fulfillment of at least a
part of his divine destiny, than
when, with the necessary self-dis-
cipline, ho obeys nature to command
her aid.
"Science and technology have
made this one world, but long ago
it was said, 'He hath made of one
blood all nations of men for to
dwell on all of the face of ihe
earth'."
